Hi I would like to find a plant that has a Brugmansia (Angel Trumpet) kind of shape - kind of umbrella-like, preferably 5-6 feet tall at full height. I DO NOT want a tree! Blooms are not the primary concern, its purpose will be to help shade another area in the summer. It can die down in the winter like Brugs. It HAS to survive zone 7 winters.

Any suggestions? Thanks! - Bob

Its not really umbrella shape. But you could plant two or three in a row for desired shade.
Opps !!! Ohh!! 😮 !!!
A rose of sharon. Check it out. Thumbs up

Crapemyrtles are great summer shade trees and some are even hardy to zone 5. They range in height from 2ft to 25ft and there are a number of cultivars that top at under 10ft.

Confederate Rose also makes nice shade. Blooms in fall are a bonus. Thumbs up

Thank you for the suggestions. I have both Rose of Sharon & Crepe Myrtle and they are much too big. The pictures I find online of the Confederate Rose is more bush-like.

I can add another Brug I suppose. Last year it was a perpetual battle with moth larvae using them as an all-you-can eat buffet. (BT worked great but had to be applied more often than I liked).

Perhaps the solution I need would be a very small/short portico with a lattice roof. Not sure how that would look but I will think about it.

Something always eats most of the leaves of my Brugs but the blooms are gorgeous. I don't mind, I'm not cultivating them for the foliage.

Cannas?

I agree about the brugs. None of mine ever have pretty leaves. The bugs and slugs love them. They do bloom well despite everything!

Pests munching Brug leaves are not munching on leaves I do value, and giving whatever munches the pest a reason to hang around in my yard. ;) The less I interfere, the more balance mother nature provides.
