Good morning everyone!
I have made a flower bed in my front yard (not fenced) and planted 2 yarrow plants there. To my surprise, some animal / insect started attacking one of the plants at night, chewing off and discarding the flower heads, but munching away the stem. It got so bad that I had to replant the yarrow plants within my fenced backyard. They are doing well now. In the same spot in the front yard, I planted 2 silver mound artemisia plants. One of them (in the same spot as the besieged yarrow) was assaulted last night. Some stems are pulled out, and some tops are slashed off, but not eaten. Who could be the perpetrator? We have some birds coming to our and the neighbors' front lawns (grackles, ducks, cardinals, doves). I have seen bunny rabbits (and blame them for the damage). I have always thought that yarrow and artemisia are less than desirable for animals because of their bitter taste and smell, but I think I might have been mistaken. I would appreciate any help with regard to who / what could be damaging my plants and what I could do about it. Thank you!
