(from here: The thread "Free Wood Chips App" in All Things Gardening forum )

Karen ( @kousa ) found this great link and posted it in another forum. I haven't tried them yet, either, but I sure plan to.

Apparently they try to hook you up with tree services close enough to you that they would rather bring a truckload of wood chips to you, than pay dump fees.

There are a few things to keep in mind. What kind of trees are being chipped. Walnut perhaps? Not good for mulching around plants. During the chipping process, did any poison ivy, poison oak, sumac, and probably several others that may affect you directly if you come in contact with them, end up in the load?. Just food for thought. We currently have 8 to 10 loads of chip in our yard, much of which will go on our no-till garden at the end of the growing season. We always ask where the material was collected from.

Good points, Mac. I never thought of poison ivy.

Also: did they grind up a diseased tree that could infect YOUR trees?

If they have a lot of green stuff among the chips, was herbicide sprayed on those chips? Weed seeds?

When in doubt, compost it a long time and hope. I would take a chance since I don;t have any sources of compost makin's right now. I used to have a fruit stands' throw-outs. Once retired, I plan to shmooze some Starbucks and 7-11s to see where the most coffee grounds can be had with the least waking-up-early.

@RickCorey, Rick, I'm pretty comfortable with the chip that we get. A lot of it comes from a company that trims back the trees adjacent to overhead power lines in residential areas. It's pretty clean, no unusual stuff. Mrs brother occasionally works for an arborist and we get chip from them too. Most of that is from residential property where trees are being trimmed or taken down. If they're working in an area where there is poison ivy or something else noxious, they won't deliver that to us. We don't worry about herbicide since the majority of the green material comes from tree leaves . It helps to establish a relationship with the tree service company that's generating the chip. You're saving them time and money and most want you to be happy with what you're getting.

The chip we use in our garden sits for a year before we put it down. We only use recently chipped material for mulching around trees and for weed control not related to our garden.

We compost kitchen green waste, leaves, grass clippings, and green waste from the garden. I understand that Starbucks is a good source for coffee grounds. I don't know what their pick-up schedule might be.

That makes complete sense, mac.

Especially:
" It helps to establish a relationship with the tree service company that's generating the chip."

@RickCorey, Rick, here's some of what we use in our garden and as weed control around our tree line: https://garden.org/thread/view...
