I bought PS last Fall from Maryotts. I had it previously as a single fan and it didn't survive the first winter. Last year it was BOGO so I planted a nice clump. It even rebloomed late in the Fall.

Very early this year I found a scape on PS. I assumed it was a prebloom scape. Our weather has fluctuated quite a bit this Spring & the scape has been developing slowly.

Today I went out looking for scapes on my earliest cultivar, Butterscotch Ruffles. I found two. When I went to check on the PS scape I found FOUR scapes! We did just have a heatwave (3 days of over 90F with lots of humidity).

For people who grow Prickly Sensation (especially those in the north), is this normal? Are they all prebloom scapes? Or does PS bloom extra early? If so, does it rebloom later in the season?

I'm concerned since I want to use PS for hybridizing but no other tets will bloom until probably late June. I rarely get rebloom and have no luck with saved pollen. I also know there is a good chance one bad winter will kill it.

I've never had a daylily do this before. None of the other daylilies from Maryotts are acting this way. Any information you can provide for me would be greatly appreciated!

I tell a lie. Prototype also has a scape. This is really way too early! We did have a mild February but March was very cold. April was normal though & all the daylilies recovered nicely.

I'm keeping my that I get rebloom this year!

I am not too far north of you and yes, our weather has been wacky. While so far Prickly Sensation isn't showing any scapes, I have had a small scape on Rendition for about 2 weeks now.

I had to move the majority of the Maryott Daylilies several weeks ago due to upcoming home construction and they are currently in a large holding bed. They are normally on a south facing side of the house and were pretty all growing quite rapidly when I moved them. So I am not sure at what rate stuff will develop this year. Looking back, I got my first bloom from PS last year on June 18.

Out of 8 Tets, I have 6 from Maryott's that have scapes, one fan with two. And one bloomed (poorly) today (the Dips aren't showing much yet). I planted mine in October of 2016 and of them, 5 are described as early, one mid and they are all listed as rebloomers. I don't have any of them you mentioned, but it's looking like the Maryott's are strong starters this spring...

Diana & Heidi thanks! The last time I ordered from Maryotts I received them in the Fall but never got any rebloom and no early scapes the next year. That was why I was so confused.

Heidi, if Prickly Sensation bloomed for you June 18 that would have been early for my garden. Midseason typically starts for me the beginning of July.

Diana, it's good to know other Maryott plants are acting the same. I'm hoping early blooms will mean a better chance for rebloom later! I've never had a tet rebloom for me before but there is always a first time!

It could almost be extra early, considering it was the 3rd to bloom last year, right behind Billy the Kid (another Maryott), which bloomed the day before on the 17th and the Stellas that were blooming the week before.

I'm not sure it would be considered extra early in my garden (although this year it will!). Butterscotch Ruffles typically blooms the first week of June so I consider that extra early. About 10 days or so later a couple of others bloom and I consider them early. I suspect Prickly Sensation will bloom with them most years. But it will definitely be my earliest tetraploid!

Prickly Sensation is always the very first daylily to bloom in my garden.

PS finally had 2 scapes emerge yesterday and 2 more today. I don't think that they'll be blooming in a week to meet/beat last year's bloomtime of June 18..

I have a total of 5 scapes. The first bloom was last week but that's on a prebloom scape. The other 4 are pretty tall but nowhere near ready to bloom so I'll consider when they bloom to be the normal time for PS.

So earlier this week, PS surprised me and bloomed. I wasn't expecting it,
because it was marked as Persian Market. I knew that PM wasn't really PM because that is supposed to be a late bloom. At first I thought it was Daringly Different, but later discovered that it is Prickly Sensation.

So this year, it was my first bloomer, blooming on June 22. Billy the Kid followed with its' first bloom yesterday, the 24th. I also had Scout's Honor bloom and that is an early midseason bloomer.

So this would be two consistent years that the midseason Maryott's have started blooming around the 18-24th of June. Which according to the Bloomingfield's Daylily farm, which is located right down the road from me, puts me in the very early/early bloom time. (PS, we used to be 5A, but are now 5B, almost 6A).

PS started blooming for me June 6 but that was the prebloom scape. I didn't keep track of when the other scapes started to bloom but they were at least a week later.

I would definitely call PS extra early since the only other cultivar blooming at the time was Butterscotch Ruffles and it always is extra early for me.

None of my other daylilies from Maryotts have bloomed yet. I think Griffin Miller might tomorrow though. That would make it an early for me since several of my early dips have started blooming in the last couple of days.

Well, I made a new bed with mostly my Maryotts order last Fall. Either I screwed up or the squirrels moved some tags. What I thought was Griffin Miller may be Prototype. It is the FFE so while it doesn't look right (edge is far too wide) I'll wait until a couple of blooms in to decide. So Prototype may be early for me. And what may be Shiraz (which I thought was Buzz Saw).

So much for saving time by making up tags the night before for crosses!

Don't feel bad, even with tags and a carefully computerized map, I still had plants mislabeled, as I have discovered this year.

Sadly, this even happened last year, when I was pretty sure that Ever so Softly had died and Bill Maryott sent me new ones, and then I found out that ESS had survived and that it was Dramatically Different that had died. At that point, I let it be. Still sad though about loosing DD.
