This forum has really inspired a lot of new hybridizers. I've decided to line out my Chubby Cheeks clump and cross with newer varieties, not the biggest ones, and see what comes up. I'm slow to get at it, but I am going to get some capsules Monday to save pollen for next year.

I don't think any of my crosses took ... Well, there's always next year...

Not to brag (I'm actually surprised) but I have several pods. Some of them were "practice" pods (my one and only previous iris cross was many years ago); others were unplanned, on-a-whim crosses (but all involving at least one rebloomer). Some crosses didn't take, others did. Probably the one cross I'm most interested in is the SDB 'Blue Oasis' x the SA TB 'Glacier Point', but I also have some pods by 'Mulberry Memories' and 'I I Stutter' and 'Peggy Sue' (among others).

x = ????

Just waiting on the seed pods now... Whistling Then I will have to figure out what to do about the seeds. (We are going out of town for a few days in August, and I don't want to worry about young seedlings perishing while we are gone.)

I would just keep the seeds dry until you get back. Or better yet plan on soaking the seeds for the required time prior to your vacation. then get the seeds into the refrigerate for (about 6 weeks) while you are gone ( no time wasted then).

Well, the other fly in the ointment is that a) I might go up to the East Sierra in late September/early October, b) we will also be traveling in November, and c) we may do other traveling per DH's whim (which is going to depend on what DD's plans are). These things already put roadblocks into my starting daylily seeds... I don't need hassles with the iris seeds, too.

I'm also uncertain of the protocol (I'm sure I followed none when I did it that one time before). Soak for HOW long? Stratify for 6 weeks thereafter? I thought I read about someone foregoing the stratification and planting them right after soaking? Confused

I figure if I could just get them going, and if they don't need much attention (i.e. I don't have to worry about them drying out and dying), then I could just put the pot where either DH could water it (for my hiking trip, if I go (knee is flaky)), or where the irrigation spray would water it.

Another option is you could keep the seeds dry and plant next year.

Not really... I already have to do that with the daylily seeds. (Thanks for the suggestion, though.)

I have 5 bee pods on Art School. That's a fertile iris.

Well, I HAD 3 pods on 'Peggy Sue'. Unfortunately, I went out there this evening and found two of the stalks bent over. The pods are still attached, but I don't know if there is going to be any hope for them. Naturally, the pod that was not threatened was the least interesting of the three crosses. Grumbling

On a separate note, I discovered that some of the older pods are turning white in spots. I don't know if this is sun bleaching or what. (One of the pods had naturally fallen over into a 90 degree angle, and it is the top side of that pod that is white. On another pod, which was still upright, there are white oval areas on the top of that pod.)

Just how long will it be until the seeds can be harvested? Do I have to wait for the pod to crack open? Confused

Those seeds were from my only cross which was just for fun. How did you decide to start them, Rebekah? They had been in the freezer here. I am glad it sprouted and looks healthy too. Thank you for sharing your progress.

Thank you so much for sharing Nicky!!! I just immediately planted them outside in one of my raised beds. Looked up a few suggestions on planting and caring for them.
I tried to plant them in rows in close proximity of some of my rose seedlings hoping it would make them less likely to be dug up by cats.

Marilyn ~ How are they doing now? Have you got any more that are looking desirable?
Any pictures?
