Well, I've never grown viola there, and there were a lot of volunteers (which made me think it was a weed)

not viola, I don't think the leaves are heart shaped enough, do you have a pic of it from it's side to show how the leaves come off the stem? Is there a stem?

I had to look up Prunella. It does look a lot like that.

There isn't really a stem. It's coming up as a bunch of leaves, like a ground cover. I culled the vast majority of it, only left a tiny piece to try to discover what it is. It popped up all over this spring, and I don't remember seeing it before now.

If it is popping up all over the place you might consider it weedy enough to be eliminated no matter what it turns out to be.
