Hi everyone it's been a while ..I hope everyone is doing fantastic !!! A very nice Lady from our church stopped over and brought these cuttings from her Orchids ...She said they grow in dirt...I'm hoping someone can help me get going in the right direction ..No roots should I just plant them or root them in water? Also what are the Orchids that grow in dirt?? She showed me a photo of some beautiful purple flowers..Thank you in advance !!

Grows in dirt..maybe some type of terrestrial Epidendrum.

Hi tarev!! Yes she said they take over the back of her house....I sure would like to root them but I'm not sure of the process for that...

No roots? You have me stumped! Somehow I can't picture these growing in soil either! Hmmm.
Hopefully someone here has some ideas.

I have several Epidendrums and to me that looks more like a Dendrobium. I am not familiar with any of the Dens. being terrestrials though. They are supposed to be easy to start from cuttings by just laying the on the medium.

She showed me a photo of them and I must say the flowers looked like those of a Dendrobium..What was amazing is that the entire back side of her house was filled with them in full bloom (growing in soil) ...It was actually beautiful but she had no clue what they were.. they were cuttings so hence no roots...

My mother-in-law has several Dendrobiums (probably all Den. kingianum varieties), a number of which survive in the ground (to my amazement).

If any of her plants have produced keikis, those would be easier to propagate.

Joshua I think that's what they are !! She told me to plant them in soil and that they would root...I mean I can do that with Plumeria but Orchids??? I wasn't grabbing the concept....

Hmm. Interesting. I only have experience with Den. kingianum, but in its case every keiki I've seen had produced a few little roots whilst it was still attached to the mother plant.

Have you got a photo of the base of the cuttings?

Hey Jeff, good to see you back here. I have both Epidendrums and Dendrobiums that put out roots from the stems. Not sure about the Dens growing in soil, but the Epi's certainly will.

On the other hand, the Dens are more likely to have purple flowers than the Epi's. I don't know what your cuttings may be, but I would tend to lay them horizontally on some very loose potting mix with lots of perlite in it, keep them in bright shade and mist often until you see some roots emerging.

Hi Elaine !! I'm sorry I didn't get back with you Joshua...I wound up putting them in a large pot with a bunch of perlite and some jungle growth so far they look fine...I had already planted them so I'm sorry to say I didn't get a photo of the cut end...This either works or it doesn't..I do have them in a non direct sunlight area and have been misting and just keeping the soil mixture slightly moist...I talked with the lady again and she said they will root...time will tell !!! Thanks so much !!! I don't get much time on here anymore but will try keeping you all posted on this adventure....
