We moved from a home that we had planted an Esperanza , but prior to leaving I opened up every seed pod that I could and gathered the seeds.

In the plant database it states that propagation method is by tip cuttings, but Texas A&M state that it can also be done with seeds ( http://aggie-horticulture.tamu...)

Has anyone tried with seeds? If so, what were the steps taken (direct soil, bagged in perlite, wet paper towel, etc..)

Thanks

I have gathered the seeds (with permission) but have not yet tried to grow them. I'll give it a try and let you know.

@greene, so once again I ask a question and then I get home and basically answer my own question.

So I placed seeds into a small container on a wet paper towel about week ago and saw no change so that's when I asked the question. Looks like I may have a little green growing Hurray!

@ricelg

I can say that the little guys are NO MORE :(

I had placed them on our back porch and with the wonderful July heat and even watering them , they all shriveled and died. My one plant (purchased) that I do have has tons of seeds that have opened up. Time to start again!!!

Sorry about that. This summer has been brutal, especially for newly established plants. We actually got a small amount of rain yesterday and I almost cried!

Very timely to find this thread. I just liberated a dried seed pod. When I saw that the seeds appeared to be enclosed in 'paper' I didn't know if the seed was the whole thing or needed to be removed from the 'paper'.

So that's been answered. Next is if I can store them until later, like maybe until spring and if so, in paper or plastic?

I kept my seeds in a small ziplock (one that are used for very small items)

We had purchased a new plant, however Harvey did a number on it and we are not sure it will make it or not. I have scratched the stem and it still shows green, so I am hoping.

I planted 42 seeds about a week or two ago but I have only gotten one small sprig of growth out of all of them and does not look as if it will continue. Check your local nursery's for discounted plants as they will be getting ready for Christmas Trees. A local franchise here has all trees and pretty much everything else at 70% off.

I can't really grow plants that require tons of sun unless I cut down some cherry oak trees. I just like to gather seeds to see if I can.

So will be happy to share some. No guarantee as far as viability. No trade, just knowledge, required. Send me a tree mail if interested.
