I am interested in the toothy varieties. As I am new to daylilies, what varieties would do good in a Midwestern climate?

I have God Save the Queen here in Mid Missouri and it does well. It is not heavily toothed or fringy though. I also have one called The Flower Formerly Known as Grif (a mouthful) that has some teeth. I planted Bitten Ag'in last fall, it is supposed to be heavily toothed/fringy. I am hoping it blooms this year, but haven't seen any scapes from it yet.

In your climate, you should have no trouble at all growing any of the dormant toothies. Since I live on the Louisiana Gulf coast, I can not do any recommending of any northerns in particular, but I will say that toothies have been my passion for many years, and the most glamorous, showiest, most toothy of the toothies come from states that grow dormants. I think anything you choose will do well for you, BUT since you say you are new to daylilies, I would not invest a lot of money on expensive plants just yet. Invest in some of the older toothies until you get your cultivation techniques squared away...get some experience in growing daylilies, and then the world of toothies should be yours.

Like Judy said the dormants should do well for you. I haven't been bitten by the toothy bug like some folks, there are only a few growing here.

Wild Hair is an older Polston toothy that has done well for me. Has a very nice scape and fine fringy edge.


Bass Gibson is an older one from John Rice. Pretty bloom, very toothy and increases well. Seems to be a very good parent for toothys if you are looking to make some crosses, check out the list of child plants in the database.


Shabby Chic was new last year and I didn't get an image of it (borrowed one from the database)


All three of these should be easy to find and priced very reasonably.
New ones this spring are Fangs to You, a Gossard.

Amber, it was on my wish list, too. Due to a plant that I won on the LA over the winter not coming up this spring, the seller sent me a long list of possible replacements to pick from. Spent daylily money is already gone in my book so a refund would have been no fun. I sent back a list of 6 possible plants and told him to surprise me. He did...3 of the 6 plants were in the box. Fangs to You was one of them.

Forgot to add Pink Werewolf to the list of new toothys this year Rich Howard hybridizes in Connecticut and has introduced some very nice northern toothy daylilies. He also has a general listing of daylilies on his website which includes a lot of daylilies with teeth. http://www.ctdaylily.com/
