I love gardening & love to share.
I have several hardy Hibiscus plants - 2 in pots and 2 in the yard. The plant attached was in a pot when got it last year. Of course it died back over the winter; but since it did't bloom after the blooms when I received it; I probably would have given up on it this year -until it came back with large and beautiful blooms.

A couple of days ago I took a photo of how pretty it looked. There were no yellowing of the buds or leaves. This morning I went out and most of the buds, which looked as if they would open in the next couple of days were/are yellow, as well as a couple of leaves. Inside the buds, you can see the medium pink flower (Which hasn't opened yet.). My question: Does this plant have a disease or virus or is it lacking in some nutrients?

What did I do when the plant came back this year -before I noticed the Yellowing??? (1) I left it in last year's pot (and soil); watered it and gave it a feeding of Miracle Grow Plant Food for Hibiscus, Hydrangea, Camellia, etc. (30-10-10) like I used to feed my other Hibiscus plants. From my description and photos, can you help me identify the problem(s) with this otherwise pretty plant? I am going to re-pot it anyway -but if I need to treat it -for it to return to good health, I would like to do so before I give it a new pot and soil.

Thank you so much! AugustaPat

Sorry you're losing flowers. They really are pretty. Check out Hibiscus gall midge.

Zencat,

Thank you much for your reply to my question concerning the yellowing of the buds and some leaves, of my Hibiscus. I have never heard of Hibiscus Bud Midge; but after reading your diagnosis and reading the description on line, I am sure your diagnosis is correct.

The article that I read said to remove any yellows buds and dropped flowers and dispose of them -and to let the soil dry out. However it did not mention if the buds or blossoms that are not affected should also be removed from the plant -or can be left alone.

It said to use a systemic insecticide. All I have is Safer Insect Killing Soap. I sprayed the plant well, but as soon as I get paid I will get the appropriate spray. In the meantime do you think that I can leave the buds and flowers that are not yellow on the plant?

Again, thank you so much for answer.
