Hello everyone,

About three weeks ago I bought this Fiddle Leaf Fig. Last thursday new leaves came out, but they looked floppy and sad. I know the brown spots are a sign of over/under watering, but I'm always touching the earth to make sure is completely dry before putting more water. One large root was coming out thru the bottom of the pot, but the guy at the shop cut it off. Can someone please help me? Maybe I should repot it to a bigger vase? It makes me sad seeing her like that.

I do not see a window or lights in the pictures. Where do you live? Perhaps it can have a summer vacation outside in the shade? Gene

I have two huge windows in my living room and I put my Fiddle Leaf Fig next to them, making sure to never get direct sunlight.

I have no idea what am I doing wrong. Im starting to think its the pot that is too small. I will try to repot it tomorrow! Thanks

I agree with Gene. Also I think it can be given a bit more water... (mine loves good morning light and lot of water.)

Never get direct sunlight? The year my Fig got no direct sunlight, it managed to output only two leaves. After moved to the east-facing window and exposed directly to morning sunlight, it produces at least 6 leaves every year. And I give it lot of water, especially in summer, sometimes even making the soil bit soggy.

My window faces west, so I think the sun is too strong for my fiddle leaf fig.

Do you think I should water it more often? Im so afraid of overwatering it.

Tomorrow I will repot him into a bigger clay pot. Any tips?

Welcome, dimi. I surely think it's a no no for west side sunlight exposure. Now I am not sure about how often and how much watering needed in your area; it could depend very much on the humidity/temp level you got in your place? I think clay pot can be good to prevent over-watering, but "bigger" pot? I am not sure. Mine was first in a cheap plastic pot and then repotted in a ceramic container... since I don't have over-watering issue. BTW, I am not an experienced plant grower or expert in Fig tree. Just have fortune/chance in growing a nice one. GL to you.

The leaf spots and wilting are caused by the soil and roots getting too dry. This plant does not tolerate dryness very well. It should be watered thoroughly as soon as the surface of the soil feels almost dry.

It is hard to over expose the Ficus Lyrate to sunlight when indoors, so don't worry about that.

Surface root exposure is common with these plants. There is no reason to cut those roots off or to cover then with soil. If you don't like the way they look, cover them with Spanish moss.

If you repot, you risk overwatering. It is much simpler to water a bit more frequently or a bit more thoroughly.
