This is an old farmhouse rose blooming in late June in northern Vermont. It spreads readily by underground stolons (?) and has arching canes up to 8 ft long. Very fragrant. I know it at least predates WWII.

I hope someone can name it. I would like to have one.

Wow, very pretty. From the leaves and clusters, it looks like a blush pink iceberg variety.

BlueGirl, I followed your lead and looked up Iceberg roses and the first one was introduced in 1958. This is a much older rose. It also doesn't match the description of the parents of Iceberg. Back to square one.

Does the rose bloom repeatedly or just once in the spring/summer?

Only once, in late June here.

When you say "old farmhouse", I have to ask, "How old ?" Does it date from the early 1900s ?

If I were you, I wouldn't even consider this a "clue", but I can't seem to let it go ..

There was a rose breeder by the name of Michael Walsh in New England that bred a lot of hybrid wichurana ramblers in the early 1900s. Many were grown as foundation plants instead of roses to climb trees. The rose in your photo seems to have the same kind of plant habit. I can't identify your rose, but I do know that roses that tip rooted easily were often considered pass-along plants. That makes identification even more difficult.

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out. The rose wants to go everywhere! The house was built in 1840 but the rose could've been planted any time between then and about the 1930s. The house had been abandoned long before a member of my family bought it around 1945. I have continued to pass it along! I have seen some rose hedges around that are also in bloom right now but are a deeper pink.

Did you see the photos in the link above ? Back in the day, they grew ramblers as foundation plants to get that effect. You might be able to find a rose that you know will do well in your climate in the rambler class of roses to grow in your garden. You are both gardening in much warmer climates.

I thought of the possibility that the climate here might not work well. I have a lot of old ramblers, but that rose particularly appeals to me. Worth a try.

I liked it, too, porkpal. If I didn't live in deer territory, I'd probably use one of Walsh's ramblers for up here. They are still around.

Oh, deer. They haven't bothered my rose hedge but they've just started on my raised bed veggie garden. First time they've come this close to the house in the 40 years I 've lived here. As for the cuttings, I like the idea of sending them for you all to try in different locales. In keeping with the Walsh pass-along philosophy. Such a nice rose, it would be a shame not to disseminate it.

Last winter, the deer managed to find a way to get up into the house pad garden and deer-chomp pruned every rose in the garden all winter long. I finally found where they were getting into the garden, but had to make all of the deer fencing in the back higher to keep them out of the garden because they were making blind jumps over the existing fence to get to the roses.

The garden in front of the house, where I'd love to plant your rose, is deer territory. It cannot be fenced.

Lyn ~ I know what you mean. I would love to have roses right by the house. As it is, I need to dig up the Escallonia and put them in the fenced garden area. Grrrr...
