Question ....

Does Siloam Peony Display produce white seeds?

Not that I've seen. I think Sooby said all seeds start out white then turn dark.

Siloam Peony Display does in fact produce white seeds. I've never gotten black seeds from it. The white seeds are viable, I don't know what causes this, it's the only cultivar, I've had do this. Shrug!

Have a Blessed Day!

To Elena's point, all seeds do seem to start out white. I have had a handful, atleast, of pods that either cracked open early or were bitten into by bunnies... The seeds are always white to start. (I have, in a couple of cases, successfully protected them long enough for them to turn brown/viable.)

SPD's seeds are white when fully ripe, they will not turn black. I've bred SPD 3 years, with the same results, no matter the pollen parent. It's a oddity.

Karen - Thank you for your reply and confirmation.

The seeds came from a ripe pod. Seeds are hard and look very similar to other Daylily seeds except for the white color. I only got 4 seeds, but hopefully at least one will produce something lovely. I really like the Siloam doubles, but these white seeds are a first for me. I had no idea, though I do remember someone on the forum mentioning white seeds in a thread somewhere a year or so ago.

Thanks to everyone for your reply to my question. Thank You!

Your Welcome! The most seeds I've got from SPD, was when pollinated by Bear Claws, and the worst was with Lilting Belle. I should see the SPD x BC bloom soon, I can share pictures when they start.
Good Luck, with your seeds. I've had very good germination with the white seeds, and the seedlings have all been strong growers.
I've tried crossing other Siloam daylilies, to see if any others produce white seeds. I've tried 6 other Siloam cultivars, and none of them produced white seeds. I'd love to know if any other cultivars produce white seeds. I like oddities, maybe because I'm one myself. Hilarious!

Thanks for the acorn. Thank You!

Karen - Oh yes! Please do share photos of any seedling blooms you get. I would love to see them.

I, too, am curious to know if any other cultivars have white seeds. Confused

I don't grow it but 'Moonlight Orchid' is also said to produce white seeds.

I got white seeds from Sparkling Pink x Big Smile, but I don't think I kept them because I didn't think they were viable Sad
Edited to add:
I also did a cross with Peggy Jeffcoat x Siloam Peony Display this past summer, and got five seeds, all black, and 4 germinated and the seedlings have been planted out in my seedling beds.

Thanks for listing others that produce white seeds.

Valerie, It looks like SPD wasn't your pod parent, that's why you got black seeds. It only produces white seeds, when SPD is the pod parent. I've crossed Siloam Double Classic x SPD and the seeds were black.
I'd love to see your Peggy Jeffcoat x SPD seedlings when they bloom. I hope you get some beautiful seedlings from that cross. Thumbs up

I've had 3 Siloam Peony Display x Bear Claws bloom so far, and all of them look like the pod parent.

I have 2 more that should open tomorrow, hopefully they'll look different. Crossing Fingers!

Has anyone ever had so many seedlings look identical to a parent?

@ Taylordaylily , you might want to post a comment about that in the pod parent's profile in the database...it might be helpful to others when hybridizing. In genetics, sometimes some genetics are just more dominant, and if this is consistently repeated, it might help people understand the genetics of that parent better.

I agree

This is one that needs to be featured during the next round of the Daylily of the Day featured cultivar.

Thank You for reminding me, I meant to add comments, then simply forgot.

Thank You! For the compliment! Wish I could ship you a couple, all of the seedlings look like SPD.
