A long time ago I read that you could compare new plants to children. The first year they crawl, the second year they walk and the 3rd year they run! During the year I look at my newer plantings and think of this saying.

I get a lot of my plants in July and August clearance sales so really half their growing season is gone. Should I still consider that the first year or wait till next year so they have a whole season to grow?

I bet your plants will tell you.

Get out there, and get some planted, now. Half a crop is better than no crop.
You wait till there discounted. You've missed, that much production ! For the little bit of money that you save, on old plants.

Next year ! Get them as soon as they come in, usually when its time to plant.
Use some hot caps.
You'll have veges before, anyone else in the neighborhood.
Go get them vege plants now !

Phillip I'm talking perennials, my veggies go in as soon as the ground is warm enough. My peas went in April 4th and were all done by May 17 when I planted the rest.

Meri, another ditty is: First they sleep, then they creep, then they leap. Same idea, basically will take 3 growing seasons to get to full potential. Well worth the wait though.

Maybe they'll get a little nap over the winter and creep ahead of schedule.

The reason I was wondering if I should count the short growing time as the first year is because the plants I planted last August are huge and blooming already. Holy cow what will they be like next year? If this is year 1 where they crawl by year 3 I'll have to move some to give them more room!
