I only have three, but right now, the two outside are starting buds, always interesting when they do it especially during our ongoing heat wave, I think I understand now, got to sprtiz very well the vine as well, I used to just concentrate on the media. I was a bit wary before doing that with its very succulent leaves, but since it is just too low humidity here, dry out time is fast, no problem with it getting too wet.

Hoya kerrii variegata
Finally, some buds!! For awhile I thought it will not perk up..really needs that hot temps of summer:

Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Queen' doing a 2nd flush, this summer. Usually I only get once, thankful for another Hurray!

My only one always kept indoors, Hoya shooting star, a pair of new leaves and a new peduncle this summer. Yey! Got to keep making this one sit in water no matter what.

Hoya kerrii variegata has been finally making new leaves woohoo! And it is also busy with some buds..really loves our hot summer, and I realize now, it likes the vine being spritz with water, so I am doing that on both Hoyas.
I guess I was underwatering these plants badly in previous years...glad to finally correct that!

I did not realize how thirsty the vines were of my hoya..I guess very thirsty for humidity. I am glad I finally understood what it wants..better late than never!! Hoya kerrii variegata has been quite reticent before in making new leaves, now it is actively growing them as the blooming mode continues...just makes me so happy! Big Grin

Something cheerful on these dreary dry heat wave days!

If anyone has a Hoya Kerrii or variegated Hindu rope cutting they could part with I would love to pay through PayPal. I've been desperately searching for these all spring/summer with no luck. I live in NY, they're not sold anywhere. I found a Kerrii seller on etsy, but in Thailand, I can't bring a plant from oversees into my home.

Thanks so much! Sticking tongue out

It is heading into Fall now, and I am just glad my Hoyas outdoors survived our terrible summer heat waves here this year. The duration of those heat waves are just so long and the triple digit range higher compared to previous years.

Temperature cooling down now 10 to 20 degrees, but still okay to leave them out for now. I leave Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Queen' outdoors year round, while Hoya kerrii variegata goes indoors during winter.

I learned very well now, got to spritz those vines here in summer. I was trying to be careful not to overwater but then I realize this is a different sort of succulent and it actually appreciates frequent watering as long as I do it early in the day before the hotter and drier conditions sets in.

Comparing Hoya kerrii variegata before summer:
April 2017 - leaves not looking happy, getting wrinkly and hardly any new leaf growth
Thumb of 2017-09-20/tarev/9460bc Thumb of 2017-09-20/tarev/a1d482

This Sept 2017, after improving the way I watered them this summer, it made some blooms during summer, but much happiest with seeing new leaf growth, so it is growing better now, leaf colors more pronounced, leafs stiff and plump, the way it should be Smiling

Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Queen' also improved nicely after I made changes to my watering. It has been generous in blooming in that sole peduncle. Currently in bloom, and making those nice nice reddish vines too:

Your plants look wonderful Tarev. I am curious about your adjustments made to watering. Do you let the soil dry between waterings still, or letting it dry to only an inch below the soil? Your Shooting Star Hoya has been such a good bloomer for you. Congrats on the beautiful growth of all three plants!

Something I noticed. I got a new hoya last year. After it adjusted to my window it took off. I was so thrilled, I watered with a weak Epsom salts solution. It responded by doubling the size of its leaves. 6 months later, it stopped all growth and set buds in the big leaves area.

Just a winter update, I deliberately left Hoya kerrii variegata and Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Queen' outdoors just beside the house where it has been growing during summer. So far the plants are still alive, though I do see some cold damage on Hoya kerrii variegata leaves, but not too alarmed yet, our weather has changed feeling more Spring-like now with daytime highs of low 70F's and overnights staying in mid to high 40F. The vine of Hoya kerrii variegata and Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Queen' feels firm and green not seeing any mushy side so I'd say it is coping well.

I think it is relishing the humidity it gets at this time, because we go so bone dry for about 6 months later on.

Our coldest winter temps went down to the low 30F's but no 20F's, no rain in the whole of December, some occasional rain in January, and this February the daytime highs pushing up.

I am just letting Mother Nature provide rain if it can or some fog and humidity. Quite an eye opener as to the temperature these two Hoyas can endure. Daytime is slowly getting longer so more bright light for these two.

Hi Tarev, being new to Hoya plants, I am wondering why you decided to leave the Hoyas outside during the winter, weren't you afraid that they would die? I went through most of the threads and saw the photos of your plants and their lovely blooms. If they survive will you cut them back, if so, how will that affect their blooming this summer?

Hi Margaret, sorry for the late reply, but here goes..I was testing the limits of my Hoya, almost regretted it. We had a rather long Spring cool down, and Hoya kerrii variegata was dropping leaves, taking too long to perk up.

Thankful now, that even though it is heat wave, it seems this is its favored weather. I have learned now also to keep spraying the vines of Hoyas during watering time, aside from the root zone. It is just so dry here for them. I am not going to cut back anything for now, just got to let new leaves form.

finally saw some promising new leaf growth as July's hot temps march in:

Finally the new leaves maturing nicely, what a relief! I am not concerned right now if it cannot make any blooms, all I want is for the plant to continue on:

Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Queen' also took its time perking up, but it is nicely blooming again in its one and only peduncle. That is good enough for me, it is quite a challenge to grow anything right now in our current heat wave weather!

Hoya shooting stars, still grown indoors, repositioned near our glass sliding doors, it has adjusted quite well. I do not need to grow it in standing water now, seems well acclimated now with its set-up. Been blooming on and off this summer. quickly dumping old blooms when new buds form quickly on same peduncle. And happy to see it forming a new pair of leaves and a new peduncle. It used to be very reticent, only one peduncle at a time.

Tarev, that's great that your plant survived your experiment, guess you won't try that again. Hilarious! It's hot here too right now and the plants are thriving, well actually the past few days have been too hot Blinking can't put them in the SW facing window or they will fry, they will have to be happy with the NE kitchen window. Hilarious! I have had a fair number of blooms from 3 peduncles on the Krimson Queen.

HI Margaret, yes indeed Hilarious! I will be more careful with Hoya kerrii variegata. Hoya carnosa 'Krimson Queen' seems more adept being left outdoors during our mild winter.

It is just super hot today, right now it is already 102F and rising ugh! Have watered all the plants outdoors as much as I can earlier so they have time to absorb some water and cool down their root zone before it gets into this frying temps.

Tarev, you are lucky to live in such a mild climate, no outdoors for my plants.

That is really hot, thankfully it isn't that hot here today, it is actually cooler than predicted, just 80 F, still too hot for me. Hilarious!

It is amazing how dappled shade helps my plants, thankful for the city trees canopy, I would otherwise have fried plants here. nodding It is quite hot outside, with some light winds, which feels like furnace blowing on one's face. Rolling my eyes.

I'd love to rotate my Hoya collection outdoors for summer, but I already know it would be too great of a shock.
They are all happy indoor campers this summer. Especially this one, it bloomed for the first time on a new spur last month. Now it's setting 3 different stages of blooms on this same spur !
