Are there any really tall daylilies that you would recommend?

Autumn Minaret is another tall one. I don't grow it but here is a pic from the database.

Planet Max is very tall in my garden, but the scapes bowed down to the ground after a heavy rain because there are so many buds on each one. I had to stake them back up. If you get some tall ones, be sure they have heavy scapes to support the flowers and buds if you don't want to stake them.

Olaf the Conqueror and Angrboda are both very tall. I am 6'4" and Angrboda is taller than I am.

Lime Peel is registered at 38", but is my height 5'4" in my garden. The first year the stems were a little weak, but the last 2 years they have held up the blooms with no problem. Scandinavia and Autumn Minaret are my 2 other tall ones.

'Sears Tower' is a dormant daylily registered at 72". It doesn't get that tall here, but it does get to a bit over 5' tall, so I can enjoy the blooms face-to-face.

It does not rebloom, the budcount is at best about 15 or so, but it has lovely yellow polychrome flowers which always open well and the bloom habit is extended, and the blooms are fragrant! It won an H.M. in 2007.

Margo Reed, Jim Murphy, Dan Bachman and Bret Clement all have websites. All of them have a number of TALL daylilies. Jim specializes in tall daylilies that have blooms which extend the season. I grow a number of their cultivars that are all over 40."

Three I really enjoy;

The aforementioned Sears Tower just wants to be tall. Even in a container, it still shoots up pretty high, unlike a lot of others which seem to require bed planting in order to get up there. It's been great here.

Fire Fountain is a large, husky plant, tall, and a nice shade of red which holds up very well under my clear skies with low humidity. Impressive.

Notify Ground Crew is an outstanding plant, and while its a tetraploid, it's bred from older cultivars, (1967 x 1949) which means it's pretty tough, being not too far removed from Hemerocallis species. It's nocturnal and has an old-fashioned trumpet shape. It colors up nicely as it opens in the mid-afternoon, and the overnight blooms persist until late morning, so there's plenty of daytime interest. There is a nice landscape shot of it in the database here, and I really like the look of a sheet of blooms hovering over a mound of foliage below. It's inexpensive now and widely available.

Catapult Sam is a outstanding cultivar here, sunfast color, and strong scapes that can handle strong winds without breaking.

Went to Ogden station daylilies yesterday. They are located here in Michigan and are about a 30 minute drive for me.

My plans were to buy 'Sears Tower' and 'Panic in Detroit'

'Towering Robin Hood' was bred by Jerry Marlatt, owner of Ogden Station Daylilies.

'Scandinavia' and 'Notify Ground Crew'

I got Mascara Snake in 2015 because I loved the bloom and it is registered as 57" tall. However, this is the first year it bloomed for me and if it weren't for the fence it is leaning on, it would fall over. Maybe when it gets a bigger clump it will be different, but I am disappointed that the scapes aren't holding up the blooms.

Omega Red is a nice one that is registered at 53" tall and it holds itself up great. Although this is the first year blooming in my garden, so I know it didn't get that tall this year, but I am looking forward to seeing it get a little taller next year.

Vickie, I had trouble with Mascara Snake too. Loved the huge blooms in the late garden but the scapes were always flopped over. finally tossed it to the compost. you have better luck with it.

Two more talls to add...

The Levitating Ananuki registered at 64", late, nocturnal. This one will lean if planted in part shade.


Chew Mailpouch Tobacco, registered at 73", early-mid, with red blooms. I've seen this one multiple times at Curt's and it is fantastic. Super nice branching and oh so tall. Finally added it to the garden this spring...scaping, waiting for bloom.
