Our tv news is reporting a big wildfire 40 miles west of Yosemite in Mariposa County close to Catheys Valley,
where Superstition Gardens is located. I pray that Rick and Roger will not be affected.

Mariposa Iris is also right there in the area of the fire.

I hope nobody in that area gets hurt and all that burns is open land. I'm also wishing the firefighter's good health and safety fighting these fires.

I was on the Superstition Facebook page today; they have a picture of smoke from the fire.

Echoing your good wishes Rob, and praying that these fires get extinguished quickly, and nobody gets hurt.

(I personally really dislike the idea of this fire so near Yosemite. There have been quite a few fires in that (larger) area the past few years. Add to that, there are quite a few very dry trees up there, thanks to the extended drought that we had.)

The residents of Mariposa (8 miles east of Superstition) are being evacuated. Tough conditions for the firefighters with temperatures in the high 90s predicted. The foothills there are so beautiful, it is a pity to see them burn.

On the Superstition Facebook page, they report that ash is falling on their iris, and the smoke makes it difficult for them to see past their gardens, depending on which way the wind is blowing.

All those dead trees from the drought.... (I was last up that way in fall of 2015 and there were a lot of dead or dying trees from the drought.) Plus the heavy winter rains made more grass, which is naturally dry now (for those who don't know the CA ecosystem) so more tinder...

With Mariposa under evacuation, Doug Kanarowski has to be evacuated... not sure if Superstition Garden is (no facebook update since yesterday morning) but if not already bugged out, they should be preparing to, just in case.

Really scary. I hope everyone stays safe. Their iris fields are probably safe. Free of weeds and irrigated. I hope their homes are safe too.

Oh dear. Fire is only 7% contained. A lot of damage is going to be done.

From the map, it looks like Mariposa is away from the fire at this point, but Cathey's Valley (Superstition) is threatened. I hope they will all be ok...

Fires are so frightening, there's nothing you can really do when one is on the way. Wish I could send this rain there to help contain it. All they can do is keep themselves safe and wish for the best.

It was so smoky here, I was unable to stay outside in the morning, which is usually my best time to do weeding and anything to do in the garden. I still have some watering to do and the smoke has mostly cleared for now, but will be thick at night and morning, due to the shifting winds. But I should not complain.

Of course, it is nothing compared to what the residents in Mariposa are facing, with complete evacuations, having to move their animals as well. Even if their house is not burned, I am sure most of them will have a lot of smoke damage. My thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected by this disaster. The firefighters and their families, and so many others that have any business to do in the area.



To all of those that are involved with this fire.

The folks at Pleasants Valley Iris had to evacuate two years ago due to a wildfire, and that was immediately after a huge oak fell on their work stations (drought-caused). They were champs at communicating and getting rhizomes out as soon as they could, but it sure was a challenging task for them. Hope Kanarowski's place is undamaged, and that the guys at Superstition don't have to go through anything like that, themselves.

The fire has been moving away from Karanowski's.. I think they'll be ok.. I believe they are between Midpines and Darrah. Just below Catheys Valley is the road in white where Superstition is.. If you go straight down from the "L's" in Catheys Valley, that's where they are.. I'm not sure if the red line is a containment line, or where the fire increased overnight. It's worrisome. We know people in Dogtown, which has been evacuated..
