Hi, good morning my wife and I live in Haford County Maryland and have been trying to identify the problem/insects that have been attacking our apple trees each summer. We attached some pictures of the apples and leafs. Any help identifying would be Sooooo grateful!
Thank you so very kindly for any response/ help.

Looks like some kind of worm.

Hi Philip, Thanks. No, as we are trying to ID what it is we have not sprayed our trees. We assumed we need to spray something that was geared towards these particular insects. We're learning...we didn't want to just start spraying. We have cracked several open and haven't actually seen the bugs yet. Thanks!

Welcome!

When you cut them open, what does the inside look like? You may be dealing with Codling Moths. The moths lay their eggs in the flower and the fruit forms around them. When the larvae hatch, they make themselves at home in the middle of an apple that looks pristine. Then they eat their way out.

It looks like there are a few other apple pests in Maryland. Apple Maggots look likely also.

Even if you don't know what insects might be attacking your apples, spraying is an important part of keeping your trees healthy. I worked on an apple farm back in my misspent youth - the farmers were spraying 6 or 7 times a year! You probably don't need to spray that many times but dormant sprays and then pests sprays are beneficial. This is what Stark Bros. recommend for fruit trees in general.

You can try a product call (surround) It's organic it's not a insecticide. It's a micronixed clay that you mix with water and it puts a film on the plant that insects don't like it will also protect against a lot of different fungi and sunburn http://www.gardensalive.com/pr...
