I just purchased 3 little aloe plants and kalanchoe orgyalis "Copper Spoons". Should they remain in the pots I purchased them in or be repotted in pots the next size up?

I've had aloe plants that lasted for years and suddenly lost them. I want to do this right.

I would leave them in the pots they are in. Or at least in the same size they are in (if you want terra cotta instead of plastic).

Why do you lose your succulents? The most common problem is too much water and too little light.

Thank you! I'll do both - check the roots and if root bound move them to clay pots the next size up.
Daisy, I think my problem has been lack of light. I don't over water, possibly even under water. I haven't moved them outside over the past few summers because they always sunburned and my area has extremely high humidity. I had limited space for them inside because my daughter's cat liked to chew on all plants.

If you discover the roots are in peat, do not pot-up, that will just kill the roots, generally, for any succulent. I've stopped buying the little cactuscollection.com/Altman plants from BBS's that aren't already big enough to propagate for this reason.

When the stems get tall enough to propagate, you can start them in a decent soil that will fall off whenever repotting is needed in the future. Should also propagate from individual leaf but obviously takes a lot longer.
The golden rule: Do to others only that which you would have done to you.

Hello Marta, looking at the plants, and the soil that is visible from the Aloes, I would repot in a better cacti mix. Media needs to be better draining, allowing better airflow at root zone. Just a slightly wider mouthed but shallow container with drainage holes would be my choice for its new container. I just use cacti mix and add lots of pumice or perlite to make them very well draining. It is summer time, so it is nice growing time for them. If your weather permits it, try to position in part sun/shade after repot, so it can enjoy the warmth of summer and help it adjust accordingly to your growing area.

Later, when the seasons change, be mindful of outdoor temps. If it starts to fall below 50F, bring them indoors to the sunniest side of your house. Watering needs to be adjusted as well when the season cools down, scaling down watering as the plants start to slow down in growth too.

Good luck on your plants! Smiling

Thank you tarev and Tiffany. The plants have all grown through the summer in their current pots. I will check again and probably repot in the next size up pot in cacti mix soil.
