I am curious as to whether this form is out there in the daylily world. It is the second bloom on this daylily seedling. I thought the first flower just didn't open, but today's flower has the same form.

I think it is that the flower is just not opening. What time of day did you take the photos?

There are some cultivars that have this characteristic. I can't think of any of the names, at this time. @Char can probably help. I've not been smitten be this style, yet. Hilarious! Dan Hansen has a couple registered cultivars with this trait. Sorry, I don't recall what the name for this form.

The image does not show the extreme pleated form I think you are thinking of when you mention Dan Hansen's cultivars. In the Sculpted pleated form an extra fold in the petal brings the edge around to the back of the petal and the thickened pleat causes the petals to stand. When the folding is the full length of the petal it gets really interesting...I've been calling this sdlg the Purple Popsicle. Hilarious!

Anyhow, what I see in your seedling Jim is that it is not opening completely, there doesn't appear to be any folding of the petal. I'm in Vermont, Z4 and we have had the coldest weather I've seen during bloom season. Lows in the 40's and a lot of rain. With those conditions it is difficult for the seedlings to get their act together and open well. I see you are in zone 3a. If you've been having weather like mine this could be part of your seedlings problem. Give it another year or two to see how it does and keep your Crossing Fingers! for good blooming weather. Also want to say the dark seedling you posted in the daylily clump thread is awesome Thumbs up

Thank You! Char, I appreciate your help, I obviously needed it. Hilarious!
Your seedling reminds me of a grape Push Up ice cream. Thumbs up

Thanks, Char, and all those that responded. It has been fairly hot here the past few weeks 30C to 35C so the daylilies seem to be opening fairly well. I did take some more photos of this bloom around 8 p.m. to show that It never did open fully where as its siblings did. Here they are and oh thanks for the thumbs up on the dark seedling. Some of the stems on it were a bit wonky this year as we had an incredible hail storm a few weeks ago, but they came through better than I expected.
Your Purple Popsicle seedling is Super!

Good to know that it has been warm and it should be opening. It is interesting that the sepals are open and recurved....although they do look a bit high around the base of the petals. I'm really not sure why it isn't opening other than maybe it is just a fault of this sdlg or it needs more time to figure it out.

Oh that's a good name too...grape push up Hilarious! Glad you both liked it. All part of the fun we have working with the sculpts. I'm going to keep it so I can see what it looks like in a clump... and watch visitors reactions Big Grin
