This is my first year growing banana cantaloupe from seeds. It seems to be doing quite fine, however I have two different looking squashes on the vine and I also don't know when they are ready to pick? Do these look like they are ready or should I wait longer? They are not easily detaching from the vine like regular cantaloupe when you pick it.

They turn full yellow when ripe and they will then detach from the vines. They do have a tendency to be misshapen. To me they have a peculiar taste, with a distinct cucumber after taste.

I agree with farmerdill ! Plus ! As with all other mellons. Short curly tendral neer stem will dry and stem around mellon will crack some.
It should snap off easy.

Banana has been around since the 19th Century, but never achieved more than novelty status. It is a version of the Armenian cucumber ( which is also a melon) that is usually used as a ripe melon. The flavor to me leaves a cucumber after taste. Other folks may experience a different taste, but I have never met anyone who really preferred it to other melons. Never tried using it in a young stage as a cucumber. I have not grown it since the 60's but I do remember getting some nice looking ones at 4-5 lbs as well as some gnarly ones. Big ones did taste better than the misshapen ones, but no comparison to the Green Fleshed Rocky Ford and Honey Rock which I was also growing at that time.

I wish I knew what Armenian cucumber taste like. I am going to pull a couple today I believe. I will let you know what comes of it. If anyone reading this thread wants some seeds please let me know.
