Fall cleanup is just around the corner. We all have those spaces that need a little cleanup where a rake would be the perfect tool yet is generally too large to reach into those smaller areas. There is one that will do it and it's very inexpensive. It's made for children, one of those great garden tools that enable them to tag along with mom or dad and "help."

This one cost 99 cents at a local Home Depot. It's as sturdy as a grownup rake. The handle is just long enough to use without bending over so it's easy on the back.

It's great for getting to those hard-to-reach places in raised beds.

Thumb of 2017-09-22/joannakat/8d85b6

And small enough to use in those tight spaces between plants....

Thumb of 2017-09-22/joannakat/ecf97e Thumb of 2017-09-22/joannakat/50a64b

But the best use yet is on grassy areas that are up against rocks where you either use a weed wacker, or you trim by hand. This rake fits right up to any size rock and easily pulls the cut grass out to where you can then use the grownup rake to gather it all up!

Thumb of 2017-09-22/joannakat/6738e9

This may not be my most expensive tool, but it's one of my favorites. Thumbs up

I like that idea. I'll look for one on my next trip to HD. I'm not real fond of box store tools. I bought an edging tool at HD that's so dull it won't cut through a stick of butter. Grumbling I haven't had time to grind a sharp edge on it.

They're usually very good about returns. But at 99 cents, you can't really lose.

I also utilize child-sized shovels. They are just the right size for moving smallish perennials and very lightweight. Not for heavy digging or prying up tangled roots.

And a rake doesn't involve a sharp cutting edge. I might buy two, and keep one for a spare.

When I'm raking, lifting things usually involves the hand not holding the rake. Big Grin

No hinge point. I have a modified pitchfork with a small spacing between the tines. It works great for picking up leaves, grass clippings, mulch, and other small things.

Double, extra good idea! I've always found if you really like something, buy two. If you don't, you won't find another one when you go to replace it.

How well I know. And if you do find a replacement it's half the quality and twice the price of the original D'Oh! .

I pick up dozens of walnuts every day. Bend over at the waste, pick 'em up, pitch 'em in the yard trailer. No special tools needed. Hilarious!

I don't want to hijack Joanna's thread, but I though I'd mention my favorite new pick up tool, a 10-tine manure fork. Good for scooping up grass clippings, compost, wood chip and the like: http://www.agrisupply.com/trup...

I like wood-handled garden tools. Amazon wants $45 with free shipping. I bought it at the local farm store for around $25.

I think there's actually a forum or section of the site where you can recommend your favorite tools. That's where I got amazing recommendations for my anvil pruners.

Yup, indeed, here it is: https://garden.org/ideas/view/...
