Hi there,

I received the task to take care of the plant shown in the attached photos and I can't really identify it.

Could anyone please help ?

Thank you,

I would call it a corn plant, don't know the scientific name.

Thanks. It certainly bears some resemblance to it (Dracaena fragrans) , but what bothers me is that the plant received is grown on rocks (as shown in the picture), while Dracaena fragrans uses soil.

It looks like this cultivar of D. fragrans:
Corn Plant (Dracaena fragrans 'Lemon Lime')

The "rocks" look like clay balls called hydroton. IDK if that is a brand name or what.

Dracaena are tolerant of a wide range of culture. Many people grow them in water.

It looks like a blend of Hydroton (fired clay balls) and some sort of fiber. Almost any plant can be grown in a medium like that, with an appropriate adjustment in the watering and feeding routine.

It could be some sort of semi-hydroponic system with a built-in reservoir in the bottom of the pot. Are the drainage holes in the bottom of the pot, or are they an inch or so up the sides?

Here's a link with more information about semi-hydroponic culture. It focuses on orchids, but I grow a wide range of plants (even pachyforms and caudiciforms) in semi-hydro with surprisingly great results.

It's a Dracaena "Surprise":

Corn Plant (Dracaena fragrans 'Surprise')

I have one too, that I rescued from the "clearance" section at Lowe's, along with two other cultivars of Dracaena.
