Marian,
The plant looks like some kind of Tradescantia to me. Maybe T. cerinthoides:
Inch Plant (Tradescantia cerinthoides)

It is definitely not Tradescantia cerinthoides . I could give an a very educated guess, but I really need to see more of the plant. My guess is Tradescantia fluminensis 'Laekenensis Rainbow ' reverted. Which is a red stemmed fluminensis (which is small leafed) with multi-head white flowers & solid green leaves.

I don't think MaryH88 has posted since asking about the ID last September. She didn't state where her friend got the plant; if it was purchased or perhaps growing in the wild somewhere. My first thought also was a variety of Tradescantia.

Or possibly a variety of Commelina.

I respond to IDs in the chance that someone comes along and compares their plant to the one posted. I agree that it is a Tradescantia, but believe it is a form of fluminensis . The red stem is the reason I said chose the reverted Laekenensis Rainbow. This plant gets confused with it's very close relative T fluminensis, which has a green stem. The reverted rainbow has red stems and with increased light exposure the bottom of the leaves can turns purple. There is a plant called Green Hill, it's scientific name is the Tradescantia Fluminensis 'Laekenensis Rainbow' reverted.
