Oh, I was just gonna plant a box of orange H Fulva europa (whatever) for mass planting and add a few nicer hybrids to my front beds. Well, yeah, after I got the AHS daylily book, I went a little crazy. Pretty sure I've spent at least $400-500 on daylilies since then. My wife rolls her eyes every time theres a box in the mail. I think I've got every square inch of my front beds covered and have made new beds on one side of my house. I've lost count but I think I may still have another 50-60 plants on the way? I guess we'll see what grows?

I was really tired of picking weeds out of empty mulch this year.

Next year your garden will look spectacular. Daylilies are very addictive. I now have more than 250 named cultivars, plus hundreds of seedlings.

Congratulations, your daylily addiction is developing nicely.
You might feel inclined to try the next step to daylily heaven: hybridizing. I could furnish you with a starter set of seeds - made about 600 crossings this year, more than could ever find place in my garden (312 m²).

If it's not all you hoped for right away, remember most daylilies need 2-3 or even 4 years to show their full potential. Of course, if the flower is a really ugly color in your soil/climate, that may not show much improvement.

I hadn't noticed! I'll check it out! Well, my gardening skill is boom or bust. Either I grow it well or it dies. We'll see.

One step at a time, lol! It does seem like fun. I've just got to become more versed in "daylily speak" first.

Yeah, I figured I'd give it a few years. What was nice is some of the first hybrids I bought did actually go in the ground early enough this year to bloom. I've actually got one plant sending up a scape right now. Apparently the last one.

I've got to figure out spacing. I first tried to leave a good 16-20 inches between plants, anticipating future growth. But I've got so many now that I'm either going to have to create new beds or really pack them closer together. I got in about 45 plants THIS WEEK that I haven't planted yet, have 4 more in the mail and just bought 5 from Gilbert Wild bc they were advertising that they stop shipping after Monday, lol.

I think I'm going to have to turn my backyard garden into a second large bed to accommodate. That's probably not a big deal as I grow way too many tomatoes to eat. I started having to give them away at work this year. I'll just use daylilies to fill in the space below/around my muscadines, lol!

Just wait until you get hooked on dabbing pollen and find the seed crosses on Lily Auction. Gonna have to buy yourself another 20 acres!

@Bkrell, save yourself a near future headache. Don't pack'em in. Make new beds. Some do increase

Exactely. A square foot is good for an adult daylily, big enough to allow it to develop its best habits and to separate the eventual fan for swapping. Once you've started swapping with other daylily addicts, you'll need many new beds...

Just to not mislead bkrell, I was definitely referring to plant-swapping.

Well, I got everything I had planted. I have a few stragglers in the mail. Yeah, I tried to give everything at least 10 inches per side. I have a large, obnoxious bed lining my driveway with tons of open space. It's got 10 or so azaleas that theoretically take up most of the space. But my wife insists on the low, meatball look, which leaves a lot of bare, mulched space. I honestly don't know how many daylilies I put in the ground but it was at least 50. That's in addition to pulling up some of the original fulva/europa I had planted to place somewhere it would be able to spread more harmlessly. It's amazing how much the roots had already grown after just being in the ground a couple of months.

I did start one new bed along a fence row. I had finally cleared out some obnoxious pampas grass and had some bare ground.

So, on the remaining europa I have, where they are in beds that also contain my other hybrids, how long until I definitely need to dig them out? Can I wait for them to bloom next summer, then start digging them out? Or...get them out now!?!?!

If it matters, the main bed I have them planted in has a clayey subsoil within 7-8 inches, sandy loam on top of that, topped off with wood mulch. The bed stays pretty damp.
