These were planted as a hedge and are approx. 6' high and 4' wide. Any idea why the leaf is burned?

Oh and I forgot to ask, what exactly is this? The White and Golden Crown sparrows love them. They forage under them and similarly do the same under the oleander. In regard to the "burn," I am guessing it is from stress due to not enough water?

Maybe Indian Hawthorne (Rhaphiolepis indica). I say maybe because it should have berries now - BTW, the Cedar Waxwings love the berries. Have you seen small pink or white flowers or berries? Also, it should be 6' x 6'. Your's looks more like 6' tall and 4' wide.

There is a shrub that grows all over the San Jaoquin and Sacramento valleys that gets huge and refuses to die, no matter what. It may be that but I can't remember the name.

Its not a Camellia.

We need @HamiltonSquare. I hope I remember that right.

Entomosporium can cause similar damage but there would be round spots too. It looks like scorch to me and we did have record stretches of above average temps in the San Joaquin and Sacramento valleys. As to the ID...Photinia is what first comes to mind and it's definitely hard to kill. Should have a red tinge on new leaf growth. It should have berries too now I think. Confused

I'm in the Raphiolepis camp. I just went out and looked at mine...the serration on the leaves is similar, the new leaves are red tinged. No berries on mine, but I hit it with the hedge trimmer when it finished blooming.

Does look like Raphiolepsis indica too. It should have berries now also. I'll look at ours tomorrow.

Thank you for the replies. I do not live at the property yet and am there a few times a week to care for the place best I can with work, life etc. That said, I am extremely embarrassed if you nailed the ID that I missed its beautiful bloom. The new leaves are in fact red tinged but I do not see any new berries. In the new images, I am guessing the berry stems? (terminology) are from last season? I agree with the scorch as a few are more scorched than others and frankly, I thought I watered these sufficiently. In regard to the Cedar Waxwings, one of my many favorites and they are sufficiently represented out there and should be arriving in the next month or so. What I have seen in the past under these bushes is a couple of my other favorites, the Hermit Thrush and the California Towhee but they have been MIA for the past two years... ;-(

It was a supper hot year with a long stretch of it to boot. It's a tough shrub and will look all new after the winter rains. Crossing Fingers!

I was raking leaves yesterday and found this plant tag for a: Fraser's Red Tip Photinia. Do we have a winner here? Sure looks like it to me. Ironically, where I was raking was approximately 100 yards from where the nearest shrub is. Wondering what else I will find? Hopefully a pot of gold and a trunk full of cash! ;-)

It sure resembles the Red-Tipped Photinia (Photinia 'Fraseri') that we had at our old house.
