I also have two of these plants that I think might be rhododendrons. Can someone please tell me exactly how to propagate them because they are getting quite large.

Hi Terri,

They all can be propagated the same way. Just cut the stem to whatever height you want .. no less than 8 inches please .. and it will start producing new growth from the sides. You can then take the parts you cut off and cut them down to about 8 inches each, strip off the leaves and stick about 2 inches of the bottom part into a good draining potting mix. They will root and you'll have a bunch of new plants! For the very tops of the plant, only strip off the leaves on the bottom 2 - 3 inches depending on how long your cuts are.

In the picture below, all the yellow arrows are pointing to roots! It might take a month or two for new growth to start appearing.

Not rhododendrons, more likely philodendrons. Smiling

Also, the center stem cuttings will grow more than one new branch but the tip cuttings will just continue straight up without branching.

@xerantheum and @daisyl

Thank you so much for your help. When i wrote my question I thought about asking someone to draw specifics on my pictures and repost them but I figured that since I don't know how to do that maybe I wouldn't ask anyone else to! So your little arrows are very helpful and I appreciate you doing that for me. Do philodendrons always look this leggy? These plants look very healthy to me and they have produced what look like peace lily pods but they aren't bushy. Do they look like this in the wild?

By the way, it makes me sad to think about throwing away these gorgeous leaves. I suppose I can put them in the compost pile but I feel like I'm killing something so pretty. Silly, I know.

Thank you again Terri. Thank You!

Your plant looks very healthy and happy and if you've gotten it to bloom, that proves it. In the wild, they are either climbing the nearest tree or lying all over the ground (like a ground cover). Thank English Ivy on steroids. Smiling

The only way you will achieve 'bushy' is with several plants in one pot. But they will, very soon, be back to tall and skinny.
