Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Pirate's Patch')

Not my favorite flower because it looks like so many, although it is a pretty and showy flower. It does bloom & multiply well, seems to be taller than the stats show, but mine is growing among several competitive perennials that keep trying to overtake it, so it may be reaching for sun. So far it is holding its own really well against them

I remember when this one first came out and it was the plant to have. In MD, it did not thrive for me. Remained small. The winters seemed to hit it hard and set it back every year. I sent it south before I moved to NY. I did see it at Mark Carpenter's home in San Antonio and it appeared to grow very well in his climate.

It is rather tender here. Had a catchy name, but not a good choice for this climate. There may still be pieces in the garden, but acts like a tender plant--few blooms, shorter scapes.

It might be said that so many look like it.

When introduced in 1991, it was practically the last word in edge-with-eye daylilies.

It has a rust rating of 1.0, I would love to hear from owners how it performs in their gardens as far as how well it resists rust. Even if it looks like a lot of others or others look like it, I would prefer to have the one with good rust resistance. I do realize that some 1.0 rust rated daylilies do not always resist rust in all gardens but my experience has shown that a 1.0 rust rating is a pretty decent guide to rust resistance.

Sorry for my belated post. Pirate's Patch may not be the showiest flower out there but it hast stayed with me since 1991 because it is a solid performer and reliable rebloomer. I have a lot of rusty plants, but PP is not one of them.

I notice the rating in the main entry for PP shows it at 2.1. Perhaps updated since this forum. It is one of a few very small struggling plants I have wh have survived out successive years of drought and heat, now followed by frequent rain or showers. It is nice having unusually mild temps for summer here, but the conditions r ideal for rust. I will post again when hopefully my PP is a lot bigger.
