Recently I read that only a few of Lambertson's daylilies thrive in zone 6 . Have other gardeners found this to be true? I was thinking of Titanic Tower and Turn, Turn, Turn in particular. Please tell me what your experience with them has been .Thanks so much for your input!!

I grew many Lambertson plants when I lived in zone 5 (Michigan). Oddly, they did fine there... but I think it was because I had consistent snow cover. Now that I live in zone 7 (North Carolina), the Lambertson plants really struggle and I had to stop growing them. I think it is because we get so many freeze/thaw cycles in the winter and little snow cover. I did not grow the two you are asking about and would also like to hear from anyone who grows them in zone 7.

I grow some of the Dips. Some of them do fine and others not so well. I only buy the SEV

MULTIPLE MULTIPLICATIONS - not so well
Painted Pattern - had it two years. Does not look happy
POMPOUS POLLY - looks ok. Had it two years
SKIES AND SKYSCRAPERS - looks ok. Had it two years
EMERALD TOUCANET - looks ok. Had it two years
MALACHITE SUNBIRD - looks ok. Had it two years

I came here because I saw 'Blue Eyed Butterfly' listed as Plant of the Day. I was contemplating whether to file a performance report or just post in the thread.

I think 'Blue Eyed Butterfly' is the only Lambertson I grew (so my input is very little), but I don't catalog my daylilies that way, and the manner I would have to search would be too tiresome to see if I have other Lambertson daylilies.

As for 'Blue Eyed Butterfly', it did fine for me upon planting, and that was probably in 2003 based on one photo. The plant increased and bloomed nicely every year. But then, I think it was the winter 2014-2015, that I lost the entire mature clump. I did a waah waah because I really liked it. I lost 2 other plants at that same time, but they were evergreen foliage type daylilies. This loss was because in March or April, actually spring, we had a great warm-up period. This sent a lot of perennials into new growth. Then, in April, we had a *hard* freeze.

I only have two Lambertson's. One is Face of the Stars and the other is Intricate Eyes.
I have had Face of the Stars since 2014. I bought it as a single fan and it did not bloom until last summer. It bloomed beautifully last summer and has clumped up well and seems hardy for me, since it has gone through some pretty harsh winters and also, some icy spring weather. It did not show much in the line of "teeth" for me, though. As for Intricate Eyes, I just bought it last summer. The blooms were very pretty, but I cannot comment on its hardiness for me, since it is new to the garden. I did purchase it from a local daylily grower and it has been hardy for her, so think it will be for me, as well.

Most have not proven to be hardy here, especially recent ones. In judging hardiness, one should consider a longer span, as a few warm winters are not a true test. Those that have survived here have generally not flourished. Ada Mae Musick is an older one that is reliable here, but on shorter scapes than registered.

I would concur with what mantisOH stated. I am in Zone 5 and only grow a few Lambertson's daylilies. They are all of his older ones (Amber Spyglass, Blue Eyes Glance - still iffy, Ada Mae Musick, Blue-eyed Butterfly). I have tried to grow some of his from 2005 to present and they do not thrive for me. Others grow well, but the bud count is very poor. I grew Whirlpool Galaxy for many years in a spot that received the sun all day and only got a bud count of 5 on all scapes each year. That had to go. All others have been sent south or have disappeared.

I have a few older ones but they are not the best performers here in general. Eyes-A-Blue and Intricate Eyes being exceptions.

Jenny Butterfield has good scape and bud count but is usually blotchy here and this year every single bud grew to full length but then twisted before opening (checked for gall midget but no sign of larvae and it wasn't the typical bud deformity for gall midge which are swollen and bloated).

Will give it next year but then might cull it.

Was sent Dreamy Drawing as a bonus this year but will see how it does.

On the other hand, I have been informed that Printmaker does well here and I bought it on that recommendation so hopefully will be able to report next year.

Titanic Tower does exceptionally well here @Pinkruffles. Been here at least five years.

I grow a number of them - neither of the ones you mention sadly - both in the ground and in pots year round. The only ones I have had trouble with were Chomp and Art Gallery Curly-Q. However, now that Chomp is established and been through 5 or 6 winters, it grows and blooms like a beast.

It may be that the older ones were those he hybridized while they were working on Long Island. I'm not certain when they moved but it is tempting to speculate that is related.

The first Lambertson registrations were in 1995. They were 'Alias Peter Parker', 'Alice Lambertson', 'Dot The Eye', 'Dust Be Diamonds', 'Intricate Eyes' and 'Outlaw Blues'. The first advertisement for Lambertson daylilies I have found was in the Daylily Journal for 1996, Volume 51 No. 1 and it was for those same six cultivars. The address listed was Ludlow Lambertson

Trimmer's New York address was "Water Mill" which is on Long Island.

I am really showing my ignorance here-sorry, just wondering how different the climate on Long Island is to Florida.

Long Island, New York average January - February temperatures about 32F or 0C.

Lake Helen, Florida average January - February temperatures for 2017 were about 64F or 18C.

Maurice I don't actually know when they moved. It was another hybridizer who mentioned to me that they had. KAREN ECKSTADT, for example, is described as "KAREN ECKSTADT is named for a great friend since high school days on Long Island, New York."

Turn, Turn, Turn is hardy for me, as are Ada Mae Musick, Blue-Eyed Butterfly, Cretaceous Crunch and Metallic Blue Eyes. Those are all older Lambertsons. Most of the new ones don't thrive here. I do have Blue Eyes Glance and Jenny Butterflield, but they will not bloom after hard winters.
