Kind of looks like a Korean Barberry to me. I am not 100% though. Hopefully someone else can chime in.

We used to grow Berberis koreana.
Leaves are very different. In sort of clusters ...very thorny.

Leaves of mystery plant interesting as they seem to be in 2 parallel rows up the branch.

You're right about the clustering vs. the parallel growth. That is the only thing that it looked like to me, at first glance. That puts me out of suggestions. Thumbs up
