Boy you are really getting with the program. Cowlitz has some beauties I haven't see before. Unfortunately many that I like are not priced yet so not for sale yet.

I got some great Dahlias from Cowlitz a couple of years ago. However I got a couple of them as cuttings, not tubers, and they did not do well for me. Probably my fault, but they grew much slower and got shaded out, and then didnt really produce tubers big enough to last the winter for me.

I used to order from Corralitos and all they send is cuttings. Some never made it and those that did didn't produce tubers so I stopped. Nice guy and nice selection but cuttings must take a particular skill I don't have

More snow. About a foot on the ground now. My peonies and perennials are snug in their beds.

I got another 25% off email from Swan Island. Went to look, JUST look, rotfl. Ordered five collerettes for the small bed next to my front deck. They are just the right size. A couple were reorders that didn't produce hardy tubers this fall or didn't survive 'loaning' them to my daughter. She is a houseplant person where I am an outdoor plant person.

I received a 25% off Email from SI but it's for supplies and gifts only. The fine print says, "Does not apply to dahlia tubers". Is that the same Email you got? Or am I being slighted? By the way, no one ever "just looks". LOL

I got some offer from SI but just deleted it since it didn't apply to dahlias. Today I put my dahlias on the attic steps and will visit them again in March. Checking and spraying is more than I want to do, especially if I'm ordering some new ones anyhow.

No, you are right Dan. The offer was exclusive of dahlias. But since I was there......lol But since I was there I ordered shorties to go in front of my peonies and along the deck. The ones I planted last year were taller than the glads I planted behind them.

Happy New Year to all dahlia forum members! I'm looking forward to and hoping for the best gardening season ever. A little hard to imagine right now with the snow and cold weather. But winter will eventually end .... at least it always has in the past! Think positive!

I left a few clumps in the ground in case we had a warm winter...ha ha ha.

Ha ha ha for me, too! I left 6 or 8 clumps I didn't want to bother with at the time, lying along one bed, just in case I changed my mind later. Oops! Too late now! No big deal. They were all duplicates.

Happy New Year to everyone. We are in the home stretch to spring. I will be tearing out my hair come late March and April between my own 'waking up' and new orders. Plus just caved in and bought three more peonies from Solaris. One very hardy tree with stems good to -30, one historical (Le Cygne), and one I simply love and killed off in the past, Nosegay. A very simple pink single. Such terrible addictions. lol

This fall, I went and helped an older, avid gardener that a co-worker said needed some assistance digging up his dahlias and as payment he would share and asked if I would be interested. I had never really thought about growing dahlias before, but I wanted to help out. So I went and was faced with a massive bed that we both worked on for about four hours. He had an appointment he had to get to, so we rushed through to get them up. There were many, many varieties.

When we were done, he filled my SUV from floor to ceiling and the passenger area with bulbs, he was so appreciative. The only problem I have is that since we were somewhat rushed I did not note the varieties. Many are tall, but some are compact. So for my first foray into the world of dahlias this spring, my planting of them may look a bit off balance - not to mention that all the colors may not be complimentary. Then I will have the fun of attempting to identify eighty or so varieties.

Some of the clumps are huge, so if I have time this year I may have to divide some prior to planting.

What an exciting adventure for you! If he's near enough you could stop over to visit and bring some flower stems to help identify them.

That's a great idea! I did not think of that. It is about an hour drive, but I really liked him, so it could be fun and actually save time.

What fun. Imagine all the different dahlias - colors, bloom types, plant colors (dark types). Hope he can help you identify the varieties.
