OMG, I already have 47 things on my wishlist. How can this be when we've just done two huge swaps?

My 60 new packs of seeds got here from Chiltern! There were a few that I'd gotten before but most were new and if you like cyclamen you're in for a treat as I have about 3 new kinds to share. O happy day.

Trying to get rid of most of what I have of these. They're all spreaders, but not too difficult to keep in check (at least in my garden), and I'd miss them if they were all gone. Just don't want to have to rip out so much and leave it to die.

Well, my loss is your gain. In doing research I've discovered that many of the seeds I've been collecting are not deer resistant, or not resistant enough. We have a lot of building going on in the area around us which is pushing our resident herd of about 10 deer (3 fawns this year) back towards the section where I live. It's fairly wooded and folks have at least an acre of ground, some lots more. The deer have been voracious since the heavier building has started. I'll be adding into the trade some trades I made last or even this year. A couple of things I got from my Chiltern order that I'd traded for and some I've found are too tasty to grow in my yard. I hope ya'll will understand if you see some of your seeds back on the block. It's not that there is anything wrong with them, it's just my desire to make my gardens as deer proof as possible.

Good luck Leslie! No deer by me (yet) but I have a friend that lives upstate. In bad years the deer will eat ANYTHING in her yard. Luckily most years aren't too bad and they just munch the hostas and some tomatoes. Except for using bird netting she hasn't found anything that will absolutely keep them out.

I think I would go crazy if I had deer. I get mad enough at the squirrels! But the deer are so cute I'd probably feed them corn in the winter and live to regret it.

There's only one strategy I've found that keeps deer away - a stout fence to keep my 4 100+ lb dogs inside the fence with the plants. At one place we had 17 acres fenced. One buck thought he was bigger than the dogs. We had to put the dogs up in the garage for a while so he could leave the pond we found him in with only his nose and antlers sticking out, and the dogs circling the pond and barking at him non-stop.
He never came back while we lived there.
I have a small fence around the veggies to keep the dogs out. They think tomatoes and strawberries are dog toys.

Leslie, I'm so sorry to hear that. I've lived in areas like that and it almost became too much to try. If it wasn't the deer, it was the rabbits. No one's feelings are hurt if you relist some seeds. Heck that is what trading is all about hon. We're all good. List away. There are so many wants out there right now it's all welcome.

@DraDiana, that is too funny about the deer in the pond. Wish you had a pic. Knowing I enjoyed hunting when I lived in MT hubby suggested an air rifle or pellet gun but I did some research and discovered they're much stronger than I thought and can actually puncture the skin. I certainly don't want to hurt them, just keep them out of my plants. I did find articles that people are using paint ball guns. I had an image in my mind of a poor deer with colors splashed all over him. Before the 4th of July I asked the fireworks guy for something that sounds like a rifle. He sold me "the loudest thing I have". When I see the deer I stand on the raised deck and throw the firecrackers at them. They just look at me and I think they're smiling.

I'm a daylily hybridizer and last winter/spring they hit my babies so hard I only had about 10% bloom this year. I put up and elec. fence for them and they're doing well now. I'm going to plant my blueberries, Perfect Plants roses and tomatoes inside the fence and I think lavender or something else they really don't like around the outside perimeter.

I can just see a multi-colored deer herd happily browsing on tender new daylily shoots. You may find yourself extending that electric fence. I imagine that it is cheaper than a stout woven wire fence and enough dog food to maintain 500 collective lbs of canines, and probably just as effective.
For me, the dogs also protect my cats from the bald eagles and coyotes. They keep armadillos, opossums, racoons, rabbits and squirrels away from the plants. I treat them with flea and tick stuff, and that keeps those out of my yard too. Besides that, dogs are entertaining.

I have deer, too, and although they don't have same the amount of pressure in terms of finding food they seem to have in your area, Leslie, they usually do go for the daylilies and lilies in spring here first. Other things, I at least have a chance they'll bounce back later in the season, since they don't seem to be as interested in my garden as they are in whatever they find in safer areas like the strip of woods between my rear neighbors and the highways. If I'm vigilant with a particular brand of deer spray and/or blood meal sprinkled liberally over new shoots of their favorites and around the borders of beds, I can usually keep them from lopping off my lilies.

But they're really not as bad for my garden as the groundhogs that made their den under my front steps were! Up until two years ago, they believed the garden was planted for their enjoyment entirely. I even caught one climbing my cattle panel trellis to get a tomato in broad daylight. It backflipped off and scurried into the bushes in a hurry, but that wasn't the last I saw of them... until we turned our indoor cat loose outdoors two years ago. I think she completely terrified them that spring because her first place of refuge when she was afraid or wanted a place to hide was actually their den entrance. Now, although we still see them around the neighboring yards and I've seen signs they've popped in here and there, I'm grateful to say they haven't been back in force (I can grow zinnias and hibiscus again!). It's interesting, because our neighbors have a male cat who'd claimed our yard as his territory for years and does his best to intimidate our cat now that she's challenging him, but whatever traces he left in our yard did not intimidate the groundhogs at all.

What entertaining visuals this thread has. The aerobatic groundhog ranks right up there with the deer in the pond.

I have around 400 varieties of daylilies and a few hundred seedlings. They think the raised beds for them are a salad bar.

Got my seed orders in and got them listed on the swap! Looking forward to sowing and swapping all of these!
