Greetings! I bought a little cypress tree that had been flocked, I gently washed the flocking off and revealed the tips of a lot of branches to be brown. Is there any way to help the tree?

Cut dead part off. Flocking cut air off to branches .wash some more, won't hurt.

So many dead tips...im trimming but it seems futile. The branches in the middle are fine . how hard can I cut the tree back without killing it?

You are not cutting the tree back, you are removing the dead branches. They are dead and will never come back to life so your 'pruning' is not going to affect the final outcome of this project. The only thing you can do is finish removing the dead stuff and cross your fingers.

No. Re-read your first post. The tips were brown under the flocking. You bought a tree that wasn't actually supposed to live but you are giving it a fighting chance. You can leave the tree as is and see where it branches next spring. Then you will know exactly how much to cut off. Eventually, the dead parts will get crispy and you can snap them off (living branches will bend; dead branches will snap).
