Hello, New here. I am more into other forums. But I want to know if anyone has heard of a very dark double type peony. I have searched anywhere I thought it may be. My wife's Grandmother was to have one growing in their yard. I have never saw it. She died many years before we met. I thought you guys might be able to help me. I know it wasn't black but a very dark red or purple. Does such a peony exits.

Try 'Chocolate Soldier'

There is a poppy variety 'Black Peony' which is supposed to have a large peony-like double blossom.

Thanks Jerry, I did actually buy that plant. I believe it is a semi-single type and not quite like what I was looking for.

The Heartland Peony Society has a really nice site. Go to the Gallery on their site and you can look and see if you can find the peony you are looking for.

Diann,
Thank you but I didn't find what I was looking for. 'Chocolate Soldier' is the closest but not full enough. This has to be an old timer. My wife said some one in the neighborhood gave it to her grandmother. She had it for a long time. Her yard went to h*** after she died. I never saw one but she insist on it. There is none growing around there anywhere now.

I have a very very dark double peony in my collection. Will try to find a photo to send, if not, it will be in be in bloom in a few weeks and will get photos. I will have to look through my log to find it's name - very old, early 1900. I have over 80 varieties of peonies, likely have it!

Thank you Eleesha. Having never seen such a peony before myself, I tend to think my wife adds to her memory of just how dark it was. She was in her childhood days that was more than 40 years ago. I just gave up looking. But if she said it was so, it is. Happy wife is a happy life.
