Hello,

Getting little greengrasshoppers on our dwarf avocado & lime tree. Photo attached of a green spider capturing one of the grasshoppers. My question is, with regards to the aforementioned plants, which one of the spider and grasshopper is friend or foe?

Cheers
Dan

I don't think the spider would chew on your plants. The grasshopper will. Spidey was doing his job.

Well done, spider!

Yes, spiders are carnivores, and most are even active predators. I'm always anxious to learn but at the moment know of no spiders that are unwelcome visitors to plants (aside from the obvious spider mites.) Grasshoppers are definitely plant munchers.

Oh, yes; good idea Zuni. If you want to do that, Dan; someone here will give you some pointers, if you need.

I always prefer the spiders, as long as they are not the black widows. Really good catchers of other nasty ones, and quite artistic in their spider home architecture.

But the grasshopper does have its place in the animal food chain, the birds and mantids can eat them. So in essence the grasshopper is a foe to the plants, but a friendly food for the other creatures, if they are able to catch them.
