Saying something like, "My least favorite iris," hits me as if I'd said I didn't like one of my children. But if I had to get rid of an iris, this would be the one. There are several problems:

1. I am not in love with how it looks; the yellow-orange seems dull
2. I don't know its name, and I can't find any similar enough to be sure.
3. It's 20" tall. I'm not sure if it stunted due to drought, or if it is supposed to be that height. I have another iris in that small bed that was somewhat stunted, as well.

The good thing about it is that it blooms early and provides some color for my surroundings.

My second least favorite is Mary Geddes. I have totally gotten rid of her.

Uh, that would be Immortality. Can NOT make myself like it, so, this year, all of it is moving on down the road.

I'm ready to cull 'Flavescens'. It was one of my first four irises I ever had and was great then. I think I have one clump remaining which needed dividing last year. I just didn't have the enthusiasm to take care of it, given the other work in the yard... another sign its time to let it go.

I have a ton of those at my house, in at least 4 flower beds. When I moved into my house, I saw some on the side of the house and in the back yard. Over the years, I dug them up and divided the clumps and put them in more flower beds. I have a flower bed that is full of them too, and I let them grow wildly.(I do weed that bed every so often) I call them common purple irises. Since they are common everywhere. I have a garden friend that lives outside of Lincoln that I give them too (plus some other irises and daylilies), and she usually sells them to others. They are very pretty, but their rhizomes make huge clumps really fast. It's such a hassle in the spring to divide them. This one year, the first year I moved into my house, I counted over 300 individual rhizomes of the common purples. Because who ever lived there before me didn't really divide them. (probably rarely)

Sometimes when I order irises, or see vendors photos, it is during the warm days of summer and sweet yellow or lovely purple little blooms look so enticing. I now have about 30 different SDB's in a shade of purple and maybe as many in yellow. I like them but they do compete, and look quite ordinary, with all the daffodils and crocus that emerge during their bloom time. Each summer i tell myself not to get another purple iris.... that being said they are introducing a couple of purple SDB's this year that i really want.

While on a quest to find a blue TB iris i acquired quite a few lovely pale purple irises and seeking a black TB i have added quite a few dark purple ones. I need to choose which needs to go. Once you look at an iris and think (ho hum) that its lovely but much like another then it is time to make some decisions. Most of my irises make me want to dance in the garden and those are the ones i love.

(edited to add) Also.... if it falls over in the least wind, turns to soggy lumps in a rain shower, does not bloom no matter what you do.....

My least favorite iris is a dead iris.

I nearly culled Immortality this year and Flavescens was given to a friend who loves historics.

My least favourite iris is Kochii. I don't care for the form. It always looks messy and it is taking up valuable space.

I can't help but thinking that this is an odd thread for an iris-loving forum.

That said, I'm with Rob, wrt Dead irises.

Among the UnDead, probably my least favorite irises are the muddy red or muddy orange red ones, especially the ones with more tailored form. They may rebloom, but...



I'm trying to decide whether or not to punt them. But... rebloomers... and we should not forget.

Each is in a one gallon pot. I'm sure that even if I decide to keep them, I can probably send you an increase. (The pot size being what it is, said increase will probably be small. ) Remind me sometime in June.

.... without a doubt mine is "Thornbird" ....... , but since I grow many, I could probably add a long list here, but the above strikes me as particularly "unlikeable" at least to me.

I had 'Ziggy' at one time, many years ago. I'd have to say that at that time, it was my least favorite iris. Needless to say, it is no longer here.

I'm sure there are much wiser folks out there than me. But I fail to see how Thornbird became such a rave & so popular. I deliberately passed it up at a local garden center years ago. My most disliked TB iris is Jarassic Park. Grew it one year & gave it away. My picture isn't the best either, and I never put it in the data base.

I understand, Tim and Leon. 'Thornbird' is just not one that interests me and I don't understand the appeal of it. But each to their own!
