I give mine away. Can't bring myself to compost them.

I am not sure if you mean extras of registered daylilies or seedlings. I will talk about seedlings. Different people do different things. Some people give them away, some sell them, and some hybridizers compost them. I think the reasoning for composting is that if they give seedlings away then people won't buy as many new ones from them. I compost the ones that are not worthy for anyone to grow. Others I give away to friends and members of various garden clubs.

I mean either..It seams like a nice way to get something different in our gardens. I know Id love some. It would be
like a Christmas present that no one else has ever had Cool. Im not and Im sure there are alot of people that are
not fussy about perfect blooms. I just Love watching flowers Grow

Thanks Mona. They are my babies. They are getting a good brushing this weekend ther are starting to shed :(

Shannon, one of the nicest things about daylilies is the rate they increase. I have a hundred or so purchased just last year. Haven't even bloomed yet, but many are strong enough that at least one healthy fan can be divided off with no harm a'tall. My memory is Teflon-slick, but if you remind me along about mid-May, be happy to send you a list of the plentifuls and let you pick. Just cover postage.

I can't bear to compost stuff. My son has a friend who loves to garden. I gave all my extra seedlings to him. Don't grow many seedlings anymore since they are so much work and need a lot of space.

I planted seeds a year ago for the first time. So I am too new at this and not sure what I will do as these seedlings grow and mature. I do feel like a mother hen to them - it may be difficult for me to compost even the ugly ones the first couple of times ~Jan

I have nearly 2 acres that are what I call "Wildlife Woods". I don't do anything to them. The birds thrieve in these areas, so I just leave them alone. This is where all really ugly daylilies from my seed go to live. I just take the pot, remove the plant, set it on the ground(no digging here, too many roots) and push a little soil and leaves up around the root ball. If they make it, ok, if not they become good compost. At least they have a chance. I think I've done about 8 that way. So far, I've seen 2 bloom just the first year, but they are still there.

I haven't been growing seedlings too long, but so far I've only composted a few really really ugly ones. The ones that are pretty but not what I'm looking for have been given to family, friends and neighbors. I'm sure as my friends and families room runs out I'll have to start composting more. I haven't sold any since most that would be worth selling I have kept.

That's like me with my echinacea. I have a bunch of the same ones all over the yard. Been giving a bunch
away to family & friends and finally got it down to a handful. I cant bear to compost or toss them. They are
my babies LOL

I used to dig them and compost them, but the last couple of years, I've given away every culled seedling I could dig. Which is good because I really have no where to ditch them now. :-P

I compost extras.

One time a relative of a friend came and dug up a ton of cast off seedlings. He took them to Tennessee for erosion control on a hillside. He took hundreds. Wonder what it looks like now, 5 years later?

I made the exception for Keith to take them because
1) he didn't know anything, really, about daylilies
so 2) they are not likely to be used for breeding or be linked to me by name.

I feel this way - if a plant is not good enough for me to keep - it is not good enough for me to give away and have someone say "wow, that daylily has terrible foliage, no branching and 4 buds. Who did you say was the hybridizer? -- OH - well, if those are the kind of plants she produces, I definitely won't be buying any of her introductions..."

I have given thousands and thousands of dollars worth of named cultivars away - I don't have a problem with giving daylilies to people. It is a lot of fun to give them away -- but my seedlings stay here.

extra babies went into the pet trade for people just to Love

I agree with Juli. I am an iris person who grows a few daylillies. If everyone gave away their seedlings would there be any demand for the ones that the hybridizers work so hard to develope and select? Top iris hybridizers work on their lines for years and discard many "pretty" iris because they have some fault, low bud count, poor branching, slow increase, to similar to another iris, etc. The individual blossom may be lovely but the plant has problems. Who would pay for an intro if it's sibs were nearly as good and were free? Another problem is that often someone gets it in the future and wants to know what it is. When I used to look at DG there were pictures of iris posted frequently with a request for a possible ID. This is almost impossible even with named varieties let alone seedlings. I understand when those who are hybridizing share a seedling with a friend for breeding purposes but if seedlings were given away routinely gardens would be flooded with unknown varieties and I think improvements would seriously slow down. Just my opinion.
