Hi!

Trying to find a good ground cover to plant across the backyard. I'm in zone 7, in the pacific northwest. The ground is pretty acidic (lot of spruce needles), partially shaded, and kinda mucky. We have waaaaay too many deer, so anything they may avoid would be super, as long as it's not invasive.

So far, with what I've looked up, ferns or epimediums seem like a good idea, but I'm not too familiar with them. Does anyone have any ideas or advice on possible plants? Thanks so much!

So, I'll give you a couple things to checkout.
They both grow low, and are edible.

New Zealand Spinach, or lemon thyme.

Acid in soil can be neutralized, if needed, for anything you decide to plant. 😀

How about Lily Turf (Liriope muscari)? It grows about 18 inches high in sun or shade, is drought-resistant and has grown well in (and dried up) a mucky spot at my son's house. In August it produces pretty purple flowers. It spreads but is not invasive. I use it to edge my gardens and to grow in very dry locations under thirsty maples with shallow roots.

You can try dichondra, blue star creeper, mother of thyme, ajuga reptans, whoolly thyme, and in the shade carex pensylvanica sedge.
