It is popular in Japan, sold at many garden center, mostly using black pine there (p thunbergii) , with small ceramic pot. They sell it in "kusamono section"... it is purposed as temporarily-ornamental, since the pine will outgrow the cup, then toss away, or grown in larger pot. a gardener who create bonsai there said it is made by carefully putting an already grown seedling with tweezers in-between the scale. then grown in pots, with gravels or moss on top, so not by using seed since that will need more time, and the cone will somewhat decayed (not fresh/good looking for sale)
