I did a Google Image search. Two are using this image and both are AliExpress. I have my own opinion ( ) of that organization...

Excuse my confusion regarding your statement but I think Laurie was wondering if it was a photoshopped or altered picture and others might be curious as well. Laurie said that it looked like a fun project, which it does so yes, somebody cares.

Since photoshop can be so sneaky, I find it useless to study a picture and debate if it was used or not. Now, if you ask can I grow seedlings right out of a pinecone, I am interested. Gene

It is popular in Japan, sold at many garden center, mostly using black pine there (p thunbergii) , with small ceramic pot. They sell it in "kusamono section"... it is purposed as temporarily-ornamental, since the pine will outgrow the cup, then toss away, or grown in larger pot. a gardener who create bonsai there said it is made by carefully putting an already grown seedling with tweezers in-between the scale. then grown in pots, with gravels or moss on top, so not by using seed since that will need more time, and the cone will somewhat decayed (not fresh/good looking for sale)

Awww, I see. You know I am ashamed to say I dread sticking up a christmas tree more every year. We often are not even here. But my kids just won't hear of it. I wonder how they would feel if the spot where the 7 footer goes had this lil guy instead.

Pretty sure pine seeds need light to germinate. In nature the seeds are usually released before the cone hits the ground. If the seeds are still encased in the cone and watered it would not work (I think) due to the seeds need for light to germinate...if they are still in the cone they are encased and wont get that light. All in all...I'm not sure if it would work, but my thinking is that it would not.

It is nice to share information through this forum, however there is a detail things I forgotten (in case anyone are interested trying this project), my friend in Japan used power-tool to drill the cone, than care fully seedling root will be inserted (use hooked wire from the bottom of the cone, and tweezer) so that the root reach the soil below the cone, ensuring good contact with moisture.
Thank you Laurie for bringing this idea to the surface, I personally wish to try it here, we have lots of Pine cones (P mercusii), but their seedling is not suitable, too weak with long needle. I am thinking of using other conifer from tip cutting rather than seedling, or may be some crassula (C. tetragona, muscosa or other)

Drilling the cone makes such good sense! I was figuring this was a short-lived decorative sort of thing... glad to have a technique for letting the seedling grow a while!

I'm fascinated by the images I found when googling, but unlikely to try it... I don't think I have the patience for bonsai, in general.
