Hi,

This had been planted in my garden before I moved here. It blooms before spring and evidently some bugs love to chew its leaves. Could anybody tell me what it is?

Definitely a cyclamen. But to know which species, one needs to be an expert and know what to look for. Fortunate for you, it is not important as they all take the same basic growing requirements, except the summer blooming species, which yours is not.

Yes, the basic requirements are ignore them and be surprised every winter when they show up.

They will be gone for another year as soon as it gets warm out.
