This will be the first year I attempt a spring cool season crop in my backyard vegetable garden. I'm new to this site but noticed that the recommendations on outdoor planting and transplanting for things like lettuces, chard, carrots, beets, radishes, etc seem much earlier than the dates shown on the back of my seed packets. Should I really be starting some outdoor sowing already? Obviously I can try and see what happens (in fact I will for fun) but I was curious what others experiences have been. Sorry if I shouldn't be posting this here, still learning to navigate the site.

Your fine here @Dexter0401 and Welcome! It's fine to start a new thread. If you complete your profile a bit it is easier to for us to figure your start, 1st frost, and last frost dates and such. We also have our own veggie thread at The thread "Growing home grown veggies." in Mid Atlantic Gardening forum Smiling

This does seem too early, to me. For one thing, it has been so wet, no way you should work the soil right now.

Here's "our" table

These dates seem early to me too.
Plant it and they will come.

Thanks Eric and Sally,

I updated my profile a bit. My soil in my raised beds was surprisingly workable but I hear what you are saying Sally, it was probably a mistake to try to plant anything. I did a very limited planting of some lettuces and radish. I won't bother doing anything else for a spell. I think when you combine my readiness for spring with the dates that were shown on the chart, all common sense left my head. :-)

Thanks for the welcome, and I'll be sure to check out the home grown veggies thread!

Take care.

Mark

If it stays mild, you may be way ahead! I'm sure we're all so ready to plant things.
Plant it and they will come.

Well in spite of the vicious spring we've faced the seeds survived and most sprouted. Lettuce and radish seedlings are popping up this week!
