Thread OP

hello i don't know if this is okay to do but i am looking to increase my collection of houseplants and was wondering if anybody would have cuttings to share in exchange for postage as i only have 4 preguant onion bulbs and 3 african violet plants which were given to me by a friend and not sure of the color of flowers as they have not bloomed for me yet.

I think it's too soon in the yeqr for her and I believe I'm remembering correctly here, @purpleinopp, do you offer cuttings for postage during the year?

Yes, I do in the fall. At this time of year, it's all-hands-on-deck, or more accurately, all-plants-to-the-yard, for landscaping. In October I'll be actively seeking homes for excess plants.

Depending on where you live and the cost of shipping cuttings, you may be able to purchase small, already rooted and established plants at Walmart garden center or another local garden center or nursery.

I have already dealt with 2 different people who joined this free site, asked for plants, got them and then disappeared without paying anything. Gene

@kandw405, Confused I see from your profile page that you joined on May 2015 but you have not posted on the site except this post and the duplicate post on the Plant and Seed Trading forum: https://garden.org/thread/view... where you are asking for cuttings to start a collection.

My suggestion is to do much research as to what will work in your situation and then go to the local stores and see what you can find. Get what appeals to you and might work. Not just what someone will give you for "free." Gene

That's raw, Gene. What comes around goes around. Karma will settle. I can't afford to send without payment up front, so I don't. Nothing for the sweaty effort of digging & packing, driving to the PO, which is a gift, but not the postage. If I had something I've heard referred to as "disposable income," I would totally enjoy disposing some by sending plants out for free w/o even asking for the postage back.

That is a great idea. If a person sends the postage in the amount of the specific flat rate box... I have sent cuttings for postage and been stiffed several times... will be time to clip in September here in western washington... I prefer cuttings to store bought... was in a small plant trading group for several years until the group moderator gave it up... miss the surprise packages...

Flat rate boxes are a rip off unless you are shipping heavy metal things. Gene

Looks like the OP left the room.

I sometimes have cuttings that I want to be rid of. I can't bear to throw them away as I think of that as murder. Sent some to someone and insisted that I didn't want $3 for postage because she was doing me a favor by saving me and the cutting from death row. ( Note that no digging involved and neighborhood post office a mile away.) I got a nice surprise when she sent me some gardening gloves in return!
