I just obtained a bulb, and it was described as a species lily.
Searching, gives that is an interspecies hybrid between L.henri and L. speciosum ?

In the data base it is called an Orienpet ?

Can someone tell me about this lily ? what is it ? species ?

And is it not so attractive to the red lily beetle?

Unfortunately I've seen a number of primary hybrids (hybrids between two different species) sold as species lilies. Lily (Lilium 'Black Beauty') is indeed an interspecies hybrid called an Orienpet (a hybrid between the Oriental and Trumpet divisions).

Here Black Beauty isn't as attractive as some other lilies to the lily beetle, but unfortunately they can still eat it with pretty good appetite. Hard to judge these things, but I think it's as popular as most other Orienpet lilies in my garden, no more no less. I would say that it probably will get less damage than for instance an LA hybrid(longiflorum-asiatic) as those are pretty popular for the beetles, but other factors influence this as well.

It's a really nice orienpet, solid as a rock. It's a great addition to any garden. One of the first garden lilies I ever fell in love with.

I am hoping that the bitterly cold weather we had before we had snow cover, takes it's toll on the beetles.

Lily beetles aren't known to be in Minnesota, yet. Gary, if you think you have them, it is really imperative that their identity is confirmed, and the MN dept of Ag knows about them. Any pics?

I am no expert,but the ones I saw on my dahlias last year sure looked like the photos I have seen. There were not many of them and I destroyed all that I saw.They showed up very late in the season. I did not notice any on the lilies, though many of my lily blooms were destroyed by a large tree that came down in my yard last year. I will have to pay close attention this coming season.

It is a chore to check the lilies every day, but it is necessary if these little red beetles show up.

The Lily beetle is not known to attack ANY plant outside of the Liliaceae family in the entire world. Dahlias are in the Asteraceae/Compositae family. I think Tracey is right. It's likely you have Japanese beetles.

Caroline, you will love this lily. Mine has multiplied over the years to a nice size clump and it is true, the lily beetle doesn't like it. My records show it as a Div. 7 Oriental hybrid.

Description: Very dark red, centre green, margins white; fls L. speciosum type. Stems 1.2-1.9m.
