I am looking for seeds/plants of Asclepias purpurascens (purple milkweed) from a lower Ohio Valley origin. Prefer seeds but will hedge with a few plants. Anyone know of a source?
Always looking for interesting plants for pollinators and food! Bonus points for highly, and pleasantly scented plants.

Same for me. I guess that's why seeds are so hard to find Sighing!

I lost my plants a couple years ago. When I saw seeds at Prairie Moon, I jumped on them. They arrived a couple days ago, but I see Prairie Moon is already sold out Sad The company has an option where you can request to be notified when the seeds are back in stock, though Smiling

Prairie Moon still has seeds. You might have to call them to see where they come from.

I have Asclepias incarnata Rose Milkweed which never set seed yet and I find hard to keep thru the winter. Tons of Asclepias tuberosa both yellow and orange. Never saw purpurascens. Had to look it up. Sounds like I would have trouble with it in zone 6 Pittsburgh area? I think I would like to try it. Thanks for bring it up.

I bought and grew several Asclepias purpurascens over the last couple of years. It never takes off because it is always eaten by animals. A incarnata has been much better for feeding monarchs and producing more plants. I still have more purple milkweed seeds so I will try it one more time somewhere away from groundhogs and rabbits. Same with Redring milkweed. Seems to be very tasty to the wildlife. I think I will have to grow both of these under a row cover for a couple of years, maybe a raised pot or bed.

I've got plenty common milkweed, swamp milkweed, and butterflyweed. Last year I finally got a small amount of A. purpurescens seed. I had mediocre emergence, then mortality as the year set in. Finally, I was left with 6 plants (under 1 foot in height). I planted them in two separate locations. They suffered quite a bit. One patch of three was trampled by a cable installer. Grumbling The other group of three...who knows? They didn't look good going into frost but we'll see. This last fall I was given a small packet of seed which I winter sowed. Now I'm looking for seeds to hedge my bet. Thumbs up Crossing Fingers!
