It's too bad that you are having difficulty ordering from the U.S. because of the ban. Static is on the Lily Auction Store for $14. That means no bidding, just an outright buy (which is the way I like to go, if possible). I don't have a dream list yet, will have to see what spaces are available. What I am very much looking forward to are the new small DLS, hope they produce lovely blooms. Just planted Lillian's Eye Did It, first small to arrive. Next should be Child Of Atlantis, and the rest maybe by the end of the month.

@avedon

I might be able to get Static from Italy, won't know until August if Little Surfer Girl will be big enough for me to have a couple of fans (from the same seller) so will ask about availability of the others then.

The big problem might be after brexit next March. if we can't order from America AND the European market is closed to us as well then basically we can get very little so I shall probably have to move out all the old, basic ones that ARE available in Britain to get space for anything I really want. Even if they have to stay in shade for a while they will still survive until I find more land to rent.

This autumn might be our last chance to import anything, only Australia will be left will buy from and will be very expensive.

Congrats on your new ones.

Nikki, I see that CT Daylilies can ship to the UK, but you would have to go to their website to read all the requirements for this to happen, and the cost may be prohibitive.

Scatterbrain, I don't know much about the restrictions in your country, so forgive my ignorance, but what about roots? I've found starting daylilies from roots to be quite easy. Since they aren't actually "plants", would you be able to receive them?

@mystlw what do you mean by roots, do you mean 'bare root'? I don't think that anything like roots, bark, leaves etc of prohibited plants can be imported as they can all harbour bacteria or viruses, or so I understand. We can import seeds but as daylilies don't come true from seed it doesn't help if you are wanting a specific variety.

@legaliliy--love that one, although I am in shock that there exists a daylily that you don't already have! Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

Actually, I meant just roots, no leaves. For example, if I break off a piece of root from a fan, and I plant it in a container by itself, it will grow into a fan. No greenery, no crown, just pieces of root.
As I said, I'm not familiar with your restrictions, I apologize if it's a stupid question.

No, not a stupid question at all, the defra (govt dept covering agriculture) restrictions which determine what can and can't be imported are extremely complex and confusing. I understand that even people who work there aren't always sure.

I didn't know that you could actually grow from just a piece of root, I always thought that you needed some of the crown. I remember reading about I hybridizer who used to go along her seedlings for assessment with a knife and any that didn't make the grade she just cut off below the crown so I assumed from that that you had to have the crown for it to grow.

The main problem after brexit I think will just be the sheer cost, if we have to have a phyto certificate it gets very complicated and expensive for both parties and two of the sellers in Europe I buy from have already said that they will no longer send to Britain if phyto certificates are required.

@mystlw,
Can you tell us the names of the varieties you have been able to get new plants just from root cuttings. I know some plants send out runners and a new plants springs up from those. I don't particularly like that trait, but I would love to know the names of the plants that are able to be started just from a piece of root. Can you provide us with a picture of these root cuttings?

Here is a little one on my wish list.

One I would like to find is
Contra Dance
There is no image in the database, but here is the link
Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Contra Dance')

I am also looking for Siloams to add to my Siloam collection. I try to add a few each year. I particularly like the tiny, eyed ones.

Oh, I like that one Valerie. And contra dance is lovely too, it is a little bicolour. A lady I bought seeds from had added Contra Dance to her garden and is hoping to get some seed crosses from it later this year, will need to look out for it.

The American Hemerocallis data base has a nice picture of Contra Dance. I really like it. Valerie, where do you buy your Siloam daylilies? Do you have your sellers in Canada, or can you buy from the U.S.? I will be adding some of the Siloams this year, hope they turn out well.

Valerie love the Bumble Bee and Contra Dance! I was just going to tell you that someone on NGA was downsizing their Siloam's last year and I obtained several, but not sure if it works to ship them to Ohio. If it does I'll put you in touch so you can ask.

Unfortunately, it is prohibitively expensive to import daylilies into Canada, so I source any new acquisitions through Canadian sellers. Sighing!
