I'm kinda bummed, I have...
Rosemary is always chancy, but Common Sage, flax, lavendar, thyme, and others which I can't remember what they are. But I know I expected them to come back.
I am not pulling anything out-- maybe they are just slow to come back-- but I am pretty sure they are dead.
I think it is not just the cold weather but the huge ups and downs in temperature.

since due to melting of the Arctic these great cycles in temps will continue and worsen-- I am re-thinking my gardening....
haven't arrived at any conclusions yet...but I know I must give some serious thought to the future of gardening.

I haven't checked out the gardens because they are still brown & dead looking...I'm sure I've lost something...probably all of my hydrangea blossoms....Many plants are very late this 'spring'...more like extended winter.....

Last year, our 2016-2017 winter was mild and while the hydrangeas were supposedly dormant, they were probably sleeping as if they had someone snoring besides them. Because of the mild temps ups and downs... :o)

Anyways, temps tanked in January 2017 and had very few mophead blooms. Only oakleafs and mopheads/lacecaps in protected locations bloomed so this 2017-18 winter, I had winter protection ready to be applied just in case. I ended putting it in December when temps tanked to 13. The hydrangeas awoke in March and leafed out from the stems... a good sign. I also saw flower buds opening in a lacecap that is protected by the house (it is in the broccoli stage now). The others do not yet have broccoli. Maybe later.

A sort of, kind of, "lost" perennial: one rose, Brandy, started leafing out last month too but it showed sign of RRD (Rose Rossette Disease) so it will have to be extracted. ;0(

Wow...had no idea it got so cold in Texas....I have a friend in coastal NC who was plagued by very cold temps this winter...I'm thinking my hydrangeas that bloom on new wood were hit hard...2 years ago, I had about 3 blooms total on the new wood hydrangeas......forget the ones that bloom on old wood...no blooms in this climate. I'm not familiar with that rose disease, heaven knows everything else attacks them......but I continue to grow them.....my climbers are pretty hardy, a few shrub roses have lasted here as well....

I think I lost a lot of lavender plants. Most were cultivar Grosso and a few were cultivar Phenomenal. Grosso has happily overwintered in my zone 6b Pennsylvania garden for perhaps five years or more, but Phenomenal was new in summer 2017. Phenomenal is supposed to be extra cold-hardy.

I'm not sure about other perennials yet because we keep having snow and cold weather.

I think I remember a cold blast early in the winter, and I have wondered if the plants just didn't have enough time to prepare for winter.

It's too early to tell. Rosemary and lavender were never good at overwintering. Sage and thyme made it. Thyme never lasts more than a few years and does better in a container. We do have several lavenders at our community garden that always make it. Even rosemary sometimes makes it in that particular spot which is under a kiosk but full sun, raised and the plants are in a lot of wood chips (dry spot with good drainage).
The Hydrangea macs may have a bad year since we had a warm January, the buds greened up and then it got cold. I may pull them out. They are wonderful in a good year but more years are bad than good.
It was a very bad year for roses. I had to cut many black canes out. I should just get rid of them too. They are beautiful but they make gardening painful and areas hard to get into.
I lost most of my pasque flowers and maybe some of the tiarellas but I can't know yet about most perennials.
The worst was the nor'easter with 2 feet of heavy snow. Most upright conifers are still arched over.

Too early to tell here. I fear the worst with the very cold January, mild February, and the temperature swings over the past month. Waiting for this last round of snow to melt, now, but more frozen mixes are predicted for this weekend. Time will tell.....

I've had an agapanthus for at least 10 years....last year I transplanted it....will be anxious to see if it returns...also have had alstromeria for a few years...that's marginal here.....

I planted a Russian sage last year. Love this plant.
Shows no sign of life.
Hope it is just getting a slow start.
Even my Rue seems dead. I have a whole bed of herbs: Sage, Rue, Rosemary, Thyme.
Thyme always survives the winter.
At this moment they all seem dead... but maybe...

I think everything is just really slow to come back due to the soil temperature still being so cold. I worked a bit in the garden and the yard this weekend and the only things with new life so far were a couple varieties of salvia, a climbing hydrangea just planted in late September, early spring bulbs and garlic. I am pretty sure there was a lot more activity here this time last year.

I don't think you can kill rue....I had to dig it out as it was popping up everywhere! I only planted it because my grandmother always had it....she would make some sort of alcoholic, medicinal? drink from it....

I put in some new salvia last year .. time will tell. . I assume the agastache are gonners .. heavy swings at the old place .. never good for them

I was never able to winter them over.....I even planted one in the sandy soil near the roadside, but no luck....

The Salvia nemorsa's are showing up. None of the yellow or orange or pink agastache has ever returned.

Loretta I have a purple that self seeds .. I usually dig a bunch .. if you want any .. it's not a large flowered one.. but it works

yeah, my salvia usually return and spread, and I was thinking this season to remove some of them.
So far I see nothing.

I usually also have an abundance of gaillardia, so early in March I moved one to a further plot, and now it seems to be dead. :(
I usually have no trouble transplanting anything, but maybe it was the ferociously temps that got to it. Or maybe the roots are growing and it is fooling me. Will wait and see.

Thank goodness Cal. poppy have re-seeded in profusion, and a peony is growing.

No perennials here yet....the garden looks like Feb.

Thanks, Allison. That is very generous of you but I do have a blue one that should come back. It came back last year. I also have yellow giant hyssop (which is really white) and that reseeds too generously.
Ellen, you have me scratching the surface, looking for clues. I really want to find my mountain mint which I transplanted last fall. I also moved Kirengeshoma so I want to see if that shows up too. I haven't seen either yet. No Doronicum either. Some of the plants I bought from the NARGS sale aren't appearing but the cyclamen purpurascens made it.
Ahh! Now you have me going through everything.
On the flip side, the three eryngium I picked up last year are returning. That's something that doesn't normally happen.

Waiting to see how the scotch broom fairs .. stems look green but I wasn't hopeful when planting it
