This one never grew well for me. It had low bud count and erratic performance. Perhaps it just hit some bad winters, and I lost patience with it (not that fond of small flowers anyway, and I like flat openers). Certainly was not 36".

Only been in my garden since spring 2017. Started with healthy, 2 fan plant from O'Bannon Springs. Only got two blooms last year, scapes about 2 ft tall, but first year divisions are nearly always shorter here. It just seemed to sit there last summer, no signs of increase. Came up with 5 fans this spring and I expect much better out of it this year. Will add more later once I see how it goes.

Lotsa weather fluctuations and a frost this morning, so foliage not perfect. But it's still here and increased to 5 fans. So I'm happy.

I got CDS in 2014. It did not bloom in 2015. It is not a fast increaser. Don't think it reached the registered height, however, the bloom size is registered size. I have it in a predominant spot in the garden and think I will move it to a spot by some light colored DL's so it can show off more. It does give different looks throughout the day as you can see in the pictures below. One pic shows the bud cluster.

I loved this when I grew it. Paid $5 for it at a club plant sale because I admire the work of Apps and I had seen it in a tour garden as a clump that was wonderful. It was shorter than registered in my garden, too, but the foliage was really nice and it had such attractive buds, which were dark purple so it had color in the bud stage. The flowers were perfectly formed and had very saturated color....really black first thing in the morning with a bright, almost neon green throat...and it didn't slick over on really hot days. After growing it for several years, it left my garden because I was overlooking it because it was small. But if you are hybridizing for small, it would be a good one to use. It was a excellent for me in zone 7.
