I bought this iris when I first started gardening a couple of years ago. It's beautiful but I don't know what kind it is! Please help!

Best to post in the Plant ID forum or the Iris one as we have many knowledgeable growers there.

@kniphofia, for future reference, you can propose moving this thread to the appropriate forum (rather than suggesting they repost).

Hello Langleyb30,

I don't grow Louisiana iris and I can't id your iris with accuracy, but I think Black Gamecock is a possibility.

There are probably other candidates. The only way you will know for sure is to purchase the flower you think it is and check that it is the same as the one you have.

It is definitely a Louisiana iris, which should do really well in Florida. Make sure to keep it well watered. And, unlike bearded iris, you should mulch it to help keep it moist.

Black Gamecock is a popular iris and grows more places than most. On looking into Black Gamecock it looks like yours has the correct triangular form as compared to the cartwheel form in the database picture. The American Iris Society (AIS) database doesn't shed more light on this difference because there are pictures with all sorts of different shapes. I wonder if anything with that coloration was given the same name, but may actually be two or more different iris. Anyway, it is pretty safe to call yours Black Gamecock. To be absolutely sure though you should order one and compare them.

Possibly identifying. Smiling You would have to compare with a known Black Gamecock to be 100% sure.
