I have 6: 'Bartzella', 'Cora Louise', 'First Arrival', 'Julia Rose', 'Momo Taro' (Anderson/Seidl/Bremer), 'Morning Lilac', 'Unique'. Only 'Bartzella' bloomed so far and it is still a young plant. And potted 'Unique', planted last October.
Frank, could you post a picture of 'Unique' please? I am trying to compare it with 'Scarlet Heaven'. Picture of them in different catalogs and Carsten Burkhardt's database are different (even number of carperls differs from 3 to 7). I am a little surprised with the color of my 'Unique' but it could be just the first bloom and cold weather (it would bloom in July in the garden).

I have the same ones as you, Frank, except for Momo Taro. Also have Norwegian Blush and Chief Black Hawk. Norwegian Blush was added last fall, looking forward to seeing how it does!

Anderson has surely done some amazing breeding with peonies.

One of his earlier peonies (introduced in 1984) is...

"Paeonia 'Cora Louise', (3-SD-W) Itoh Hybrid Peony, (Anderson, 1984), USDA Hardiness Zone 4, Medium Height, semi-double, White petals, lavender flares, yellow stamens, red filaments, slightly fragrant, midseason bloomer, Michigan Bloom Month 5b.

Flares are described as deep lavender, purple or deep red. Named after Anderson's grandmother. Roger F. Anderson (Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin) began hybridizing peonies in the early 1970s. He is best known for his intersectional hybrids."

Cora Louise is surely a charming peony. Waiting for my first bloom...

I think several is enough. They are all similar to each other except color, and with too many thin and simple flowers.

They do amazingly well for me. They give me quite a lot of blooms per bush. Only thing is they don't make good cut flowers as they wilt within a day. But I am going to try a technique that I just learn, keeping lilac from wilting after cut. I experimented this technique on my lilac this past week and I am happy to report that it really works! THe lilac lasted 5 days. If anyone is interested in this technique, I will gladly share it here. Anyway, I will report here if I am able to achieve the same with my itohs.

OK, here is a method I used to prolong the freshness of lilacs. If you ever cut lilacs for arrangement, you will find that they always look wilted within an hour of cutting. I have been really frustrated about this. So i researched on the internet and found several methods. Anyway I combined these methods and did the following for my cut lilacs. I was able to get my lilac blooms to stay fresh for 5 days without any refrigeration.

1. Cut lilac early in the morning when the air is still cool. It is best to cut them when the spray is about half bloomed/opened.
2. As soon as they are cut, immediately plunge the stems into cold clean water added with flower preservative. Some websites said to use aspirin if you don't have flower preservative. But an expert on lilac from Rochester New York advised to use flower preservative. They are sold in small packets on Amazon like $17 for 200 packs.
3. Then strip off most leaves and give the end stems (about 1" from the cut end) a few gentle whacks (with your pruner) to slightly break up the hardwood and bark. Then you put them back in the water with the flower preservative. Let them sit in this solution for about 30 min and you can use them for arrangement.

If you need to cut more stems off for your arrangement, cut the stems under the water if possible. Then give it another couple of whacks.

I think the above method is useful for flowers that grow and bloom on hard woody stems. Though I don't think you want to smash the stems if the flowers are on soft stems. I think the flower preservative in the second step is the trick in keeping itoh and tree peony blooms from wilting to quickly. THis is just my theory. I will find out more when I experiment with them when they bloom this spring.

I love Joanna Marlene and Kopper Kettle. I have had KK my list for a while but keep getting distracted by peonies on sale. They are all so beautiful, it is hard to go wrong. Dug up my rhubarb bed and need to prepare for peonies I have in a pot. Two ordered last fall arriving too late to get in ground. Two my neighbor just left in his garage all winter and spring. Not sure they will do much this year. And five or six divisions from Garden Treasure from last fall. No idea what to do with them. I planted three larger roots in the garden and all are sending up pips so may as well gift some to friends and the rest to the botanical garden for their sale this weekend.
