I have grown many so called black irises and so far the darkest one here is Old Black Magic. I am not through growing and comparing them. Smiling

I've grown several over the years, and I still cannot narrow it down to one. In no particular order are:

My blackest iris is "Black Suited" (left). It is one of my favourite blacks along with "Dark Passion" (middle) which is a very dark purple with frills and is scented and "Devil May Care" (right) which has dark purple standards and black falls with a beautiful orange and blue beard.

I'm waiting for my first black Iris to bloom!...and I see color peaking! I think I also purchased Raven Girl, though, I'll have to double check my book.

Originally wanted to really focus on finding the truest blues though I think I am just as enamored with these dark beauties they are all so stunningly elegant.

Timothy I really like your Black is Black, color and form!

Saw this one at the garden center today, it really caught my eye. Think it is Black Storm, I will check. Not much of an Iris person, but this was really spectacular.
Thumb of 2018-05-17/crawgarden/f4f845 Found out the name is Before the Storm.

I'm waiting for this year's bloom before deciding. Last year I was merely determining if they all looked black and they did.

I'm not that crazy about the solid blacks. But I do like the purple standards with the black falls. I remember having one called "Oklahoma Crude" and it seems to me another was called "Ghost Town". But anytime I grow a black anything, it doesn't seem to want to thrive for me. But then I ain't the best gardener on the planet. Lol. [But on those two, I remember that the falls were really, really black....at least to me.].

Sorry. On my previous post, I said "Ghost Town". It's "Ghost Train".

Again. Not solid black, but the falls were a very nice black.

How tall was your 'Black Lipstick', Jan? Mine was pretty short. I don't know what I did wrong.
Evaluating an iris seedling, hopefully for rebloom

Two of my favorite black irises come to mind. Midnight Oil, partly because it has a nice grape beard and Old Black Magic because of the cauldron glow effect when it is seen in the sun.
